With Iowa having Williams and freshmen Bohannon as the point guards i was wondering if you guys think Iowa would look at a 5th year likie Aj English Iona or Georgetown PG as a guy to come in and let williams back up and bohannon redshirt

I don't think so. I anticipate that between Williams, Bohannon, Fleming, Moss and McCaffery coming in 2017 the idea is to be similar to Gesell/Clemmons or before that Gesell/Marble. Essentially two point guards on the floor all the time. Or, what we consider point guards to be.

I remember Fran at Sienna always having not 1, but multiple guys who could handle the ball. I think he likes to have multiple options out there in case of mis-matches and what not. He just alway seemed to have the lengthy post players and then 1-2 athletic guards who could create and attack the rim. The year they took down OSU was a thing of beauty, their guards played awesome that game!

Dan, problem with that is we go into next year with pretty much ZERO experience at PG, and Fran would be basically be pretty much hoping that someone steps up. Pretty big question mark.

With his kid coming in the year after that tho and riding the success of the past 2 season, maybe Fran is willing to take that gamble for next year?

Will certainly be a throw away year if Williams is our best option and he doesn't have the greatest off season in Hawkeye college hoops history.

Good comment. Yeah I think the key to what Fran does is to have five guys moving and nobody is stuck being where they shouldn't. Diversity, positionless. The pass is faster than the dribble and it can make anyone a point guard.

Yeah, we've all got our way of looking at it. And maybe you will turn out right. But I recall when we had one more scholarship to give, after Hutton, Fleming, Wagner, Moss and Williams....we were looking for a big. And McCaffery ended up taking Jones because he liked his talent. We'd stopped even looking for a point guard at that point and we knew Gesell and Clemmons were seniors, and only Williams would be left in a year.

Then last summer Williams even said the staff told him he had to get ready as in a year he could be THE point guard. Yet we only went after one in the 2016 class. (Yes, we offered many..but took one, Jordan Bohannon.) And even with Conner committed, I notice there is no other point guard being pursued in 2017. Looks to me like we want a big.

So, unless McCaffery and staff have gone completely bonkers, there must be SOMETHING about our roster that they like. And I'm betting it's Williams. Or I would bet...but I don't bet money...but I'm guessing it is Williams. ;)

How much experience did Gessell and Clemmons have as freshman when they played point? It's going to be a tough year anyway losing 4 seniors so just go with what we have.

How many games did Iowa win Gesell and Clemmons freshman year? Tough year next year? Have you not been reading the posts here? We are going to be about as good next year, as this year, because we have studs, Ky and Duke like studs, waiting in the wings.

You are correct. 2017 recruits will not help in 2016. Fran would be an idiot not to consider a 5 year PG, if a scholarship opened up. Fran's no idiot. He'll take the experience for next year, if nothing else as a guy for the young guys to learn from. You have to wonder how good Williams is that he can't even hardly get mop up minutes in blowouts. The kid wasn't even primarily a PG in high school. It will take him time to get used to starting as a PG in the B1G. Going from practice, no game experience, to starter playing 25-30+ minutes is a huge jump.

That and I think there is something to the fact that in 2012/13 we won 25 games. 9-9 in the Big Ten and nearly making the NCAA's (Personally I still think we got hosed against Michigan State in the BTT.) We did get to the NIT Championship. No, not what we'd want but not terrible.

For upper classmen we had one senior in May, and three Juniors in Marble, Basabe and McCabe. As opposed to that, in 2016/17 we could have one senior in Jok, and two Juniors in Uhl and Jones.

Sophomores? Back then it was White, Oglesby and Olaseni. Next year Baer, Ellingson, Wagner, Williams, Fleming.

That's leaves Freshmen. 2012/13 Gesell, Clemmons, Ingram, Meyer and Woody. Next year? Moss, Hutton, Cook, Bohannon, Kriener, Pemsl.

I guess if all anyone is saying is we will be inexperienced? Well, yeah, welcome to College Basketball. If they are trying to say we need to pull the pin out of the hand grenade and get it over with? Why? Because we don't know exactly what to expect? All I can say is pull the pin out when I'm not around...I think we'll be fine next year. Competitive, raw, learning. Nothing unusual.

We have guys who can get the ball up the court.but next year will we have a guy who can defend a point guard.

I....don't know about that. I am excited, though, to see how athletic they are and what they can do after a year of red shirt.

Hey Genius... Dan beat me to it ..... they won 25 freaking games, 9-9 in a tougher B1G than this year and made the NIT finals with 2 inexperienced freshman point guards. Marble did step in and play some point at times and when Gesell went down with the foot injury so that helped but we still had freshman handling the ball at key junctures throughout the season. I recall Clemmons playing very well in an early season stretch and against ISU who had an ex-MSU transfer veteran.

It will likely be rough next year but take it in the shorts while our young guys get some experience. By the following year they will be much more experienced and we will be ready to roll again. What good does it do to bring a guy in for a year to take PT away from young players who could be on the court multiple years?

We will miss the oodles of dirty work Woody provides every but as much as MG because no one on the returning roster does some of these things like screening for Jok.

As long as the 5th year is an option for teams it ought to be considered.

They're like Free Agents.

They can really help.

I think it's an odd rule, but did see Tom Davis make a case for it on tv.

But yes... That could be a difference maker.

Take a couple years ago iowa state used royce white to bring the ball up the court and run their offense. But you wouldn't want him defending a point guard would you? I'm not worried about getting the ball up the court on offense. I'm more worried about the defense we lose. Between ellingson, moss, bohanna, who do you think has the best chance of guarding point guards. Remember you can't call yourself a point guard if you can't defend one.

Hutton can defend a point. but we will see .. Ever hear the story about the Zen Master and the little boy?? One day watch the movie," Charlie Wilson's War". Pretty good story about life IMO .

Whoever takes on point guard will have 3 of the other four starters new next year. Even if Mike G came back, it would still be a learning lesson playing with the new troops.

Ok In your first post, I thought you were suggesting that we don't have guys who can run the offense and defend the other team's PG this year. Next year is a pretty big question mark at PG on both ends, but both guys have skills. Williams has the physical capability, especially on defense, but he has never really played PG and run an offense. Bohanon will be a shooting upgrade, but it is less clear how he will do against premium athletes. I think there is almost no chance that Fran will add additional PGs, so we will need to wait and see how these guy develop. Moving from two seniors to two first-year guys will make it very interesting.

Are those guys leaving? Just can't recruit from another school

If someone transfers out wouldn't that open scholarship go to Baer?

That was my thought. I highly doubt two guys are going to leave. If one does that open scholly obviously goes to Nick

Dan....will you allow me to leave the foxhole here with ya when certain posters pull that pin? I want to see this talent Fran and coaches have assembled play the game of BB. And all that matters is the way they are looking at it too cause I think I see what they are seeing.

And I'm betting it's Williams too. Always have. I don't know why others can't see this and not w/o some warts along the way but Williams/Bohannon and the talent next year looks pretty darn good to me. Can't wait to see the warts and all. We'll be fine.

Might sound crazy, but it would've been nice to see Dickerson stick around. Who knows maybe after 2 years in the system and getting some minutes he could help out at the PG situation next year.

It's going to be one interesting ride.

Stupid statement time. Folks, we all be sitting in a running car, in a garage, with the big door closed. Does that sound bad? Why? In a second we can push the door opener and be screaming, "Road Trip!!!!" :D

I dont think that's automatic next year, unless Mccaffery said something, maybe he did I dont know. If there's a scholarship available and Fran sees a 5th year guy who could really help, that's where it would go. Baer knew what he was signing up for walking on and I doubt there was ever a guarantee of a scholarship. Not saying he hasnt played well enough to be worthy, he has, but maybe next year isnt the year he gets one.

I hate the 5 the year rule. What a acre for s advil that pays for a student's education and Ernst go play the last year else where. Rip off

Autocorrect really made a mess of that. Unless you really were referring to advil, acre and Ernst in your response.

I have no info on this but I believe this is a distinct possibility.
