Hope people show up tomorrow

Because there’s nothing else to do in the winter in Lincoln, NE other then to attend women’s volleyball and men’s basketball games.
Sorry but Lincoln/Omaha = IC/CR
In terms of entertainment options in winter.

This is what I don't understand. What is so different about Nebraska and Iowa hoops fans? Two Midwestern states right next door to each other, yet apparently different people.
Seems easily explainable by population dynamics

It is 53 minute drive from downtown Omaha to Pinnacle arena. Omaha population 483,000.
Lincoln itself has 294,000 population, and 967,000 in metropolitan Lincoln-Omah area.

Iowa City-Cedar Rapids corridor is 500K population. Carver Arena Location isn't very convenient for Commuters and it is inconvenietnly located on the other side of the River for most of the students. I've been to a few games in winter when I am back in Iowa City....If you park close you have to pay up and then get stuck in traffic. If you park farther away, cheap, but long walk and weather can be sucky. I can see why it would be a hassle for season ticket holders and also pain for most of the students. I only went to a single games in the old field house, but the noise from the pounding of metal bleachers was pretty exciting. Carver just cement.

Something has occurred to me regarding Men's BB. Fans complain about -

The coach
The players
The fans
The students
The building
The parking
The AD
The weather

Everything but the Carver Cones.

They must be awesome!

Crowd was very lively and nearly full....maybe 1000 empty seats behind student section...sellout otherwise....how bout those Hawkeyes!!

I was there. Crowd was okay but not very loud in my opinion. The announced attendance was just over 10k which I think was correct. Middles were full but both baskets had thousands of empty seats.

I was on campus. Yes, I know the facts. Not renewed = fired. Gave him no reason to recruit. Great job Bowlsby
As a Hawkeye fan, I didn't express any great desire to cut Coach Davis loose, but that said, I was disappointed that he just stopped recruiting for the team. As I said, I half expect McCaffery to pull up stakes and join his boys in Indiana, but he is still recruiting, trying to improve the team.

All time winningest coach doesn't mean squat. (See Ferentz, Kirk).

The great 1970 Iowa team played 20 games in the regular season. This year's team will play, I think, 31 games, several against teams in the 300-range. You do the math.
No one factors in games per season played when totaling a coaches wins. He is what his victory number is. And Kirk just proves my point. Winningest coach ever in the B1G? You think Goetz is going to fire him? She won't be firing McCaffery either, but he may choose to leave after this season. Or he may stay for another ten years. It will be both coaches choice as when to move on or retire.

Come on man ! Going to the games is not much of a hassle at all.

And the all-too-common attitude these days of bitching and pointing fingers but not actually doing anything to make the situation better,

It's what everyone today gets angry at our kids over. I've said this a ton... I'm not thrilled with where we are at as a program but, to me, fans have to support even when times are tough.

I would say times are just average and not even terrible right now.

Honestly 08, I don't think it's just an Iowa problem. College basketball isn't what it used to be unfortunately. I don't think college basketball will ever be as popular as it once was for a myriad of reasons. I think people watch the tournament nowadays and that's about it.

Personally, I used to love watching Iowa MBB but it's just not a priority at all like it used to be. I've seen maybe 2 games in the last three years. Not judging others for watching at all but that's just kind of where I'm at. The one and done rule pissed me off. I'd rather they just let them go directly to the NBA personally. Excessive pay for play now, transfers with free reign, etc etc. The list goes on. It's not just us struggling for attendance I imagine.

Probably just that I've gotten older and further removed from the school. Who knows.

Good grief….the Hawks won! No need to slam Fran.
I was at the game last night, good crowd and fun game to watch and we played well. But im not going to get fooled into thinking this teams doing something the previous 15years of fran coached teams couldn’t do. Postseason success matters, and Fran hasn’t delivered any

I’m so glad you brought up this new point that has totally never been discussed here before. You’ve really made a valuable contribution to this board and aren’t just wasting your time being completely repetitive. I have no doubt Beth Goetz reads this board regularly and will heed your sage insight.

Keep calling out fans for “ragging on the program” and “hating on the players” and “not caring anymore” and this is the response you’re going to get. Fans are apathetic for 1 reason and 1 reason only and he’s standing on the sidelines with hands firmly in his pockets. One game doesn’t change his body of work

That's odd but my alert said you quoted me in this post.

When you factor in recruiting base, attractiveness of academics and campus setting, number of wealthy alums, etc., Iowa should have the 17th or 18th best program in the conference. And yet the teams consistently finish much higher than that under Fran. Look at Minnesota; things could be much, much worse.

The people who bitch about things not changing under Fran aren’t looking at the facts. Look at how Fran had changed his recruiting. Instead of getting transfers like Krikke and Brauns, he’s now getting athletes like Thelwell, Traore and Johnson-Arigu. The fact that Iowa is so aggressively pursuing transfers is in and of itself a change in philosophy.

Look at the high school recruits he’s getting. Players like Diakite, Briscoe and Shabazz all are known for their defense. Yes, there needs to be a greater emphasis on defensive technique and intensity in the program, but the days of Iowa not having the athletes to match up on defense are ending.

The desire for more postseason success has been discussed ad nauseam on this board. We all want it. Fran has made changes that should put the program in position to achieve that going forward. If you can’t see that, you’re just being petulant.

lol that’s just dumb. Guessing people that have tuned out are ones that used to care a lot and got tired of caring because we get the same product every year. Screw them, i guess. Oh, and i don’t see a lot of “program” bashing, i see a lot of “fran” bashing, which is 100% warranted
And Fran running the program is not program bashing?

Fans can’t love the program/school and dislike the way the coach runs the program?
Of course they can. And I tend to be in that camp.

But thats not what’s happening. People dislike Fran but are using that as justification to completely give up on the program. That’s where I draw the line.

By giving up on the program under Fran, you are hurting the program as a whole and, therefore, making this a less desirable spot for coaching candidates after Fran. In otherwords, by giving up on the program now, you are screwing the program in the future.

Not going to games and bitching online is hurting the program now and in the future.

Nah. Plenty of programs have been in the same stale spot as iowa and rebounded just fine with the right hire of a new coach. Shoot, Fran himself is a prime example of that when he came to Iowa.

Take a job that isn’t particularly desirable and make it less desirable. Genius!

Iowa’s a BIG team, not going to be overly difficult to lure a younger mid-major coach in. Barta really f’d us with Frans last extension which subsequently let DeVries out of the state.

A younger mid-major coach like Lickliter or Alford? What a great idea. You’re totally right that a toxic, lazy fanbase is gonna pay off big!

I agree with this scenario completely.
