Leonard Hamilton over unpaid NIL $$$ last season.

Six former Florida State basketball players are suing coach Leonard Hamilton over unpaid NIL cash, according to Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger. On3’s Pete Nakos confirmed the report.

“In a landmark filing, six former FSU basketball players are suing Seminoles coach Leonard Hamilton over $1.5 million in unpaid NIL cash they say he promised them,” Dellenger wrote on Twitter. “The complaint details a team-wide boycott of a practice last season over the payments.”

Ouch. That's not a good look...

Not hyperbole - I have about two more years left in me for college sports if things don’t change dramatically. It’s all a mess and causing fans like myself to just not care anymore. It’s even spilling into women’s sports and Olympic sports. It’s all disgusting and way out of control. I honestly can’t believe we are paying or promising that much for just 1/2 of that crappy basketball team.

I still think the NCAA has or had a strategy to sit back and let the place burn in hopes all of this would cause a reaction to bring it back under no pay and being better regulated. The slackening of the transfer rules and ease to extend eligibility at same time as NIL being allowed with very little over-site and no caps seem intentional.

Didn’t the courts take that (NIL) out of their hands essentially?
Is the hope/expectation to get some kind of congressional legislative fix, to grant the NCAA a monopoly on college athletics so they can actually create and enforce rules again on these subjects?

Never. Just try and write a law saying people can’t earn money. You lose in court all day everyday.

Players need to quit believing everything they are told.

If it isn’t in writing you need to quit counting it.
The only "fix" I see is for these kids to sign binding contracts that all teams in FBS honor. A kid signs a 2 yr contract with a school....they can't transfer out. Schools have to honor the contracts as well...can't cut a kid that doesn't perform like they do in the NFL.

It's pretty much the only way to get a handle on things.

So it's OK to break your word if it isn't in writing?

Yeah, I know you didn't actually say that. But you say what many of us think. And thinking that way has led to a culture where we too often blame the victim rather than the lying cheaters.

Heck, we even prefer lying cheaters as President. The more lying and cheating, the better.

I’m there with you. I think we’re lucky at Iowa with how our NIL (Swarm) is structured and we really don’t seem to have these issues that other schools are seeing. With the exception of a couple instances, we’re not seeing a ton of turnover either. A testament to our coaches and the types of kids we recruit.

But I’m getting real tired of NIL and the greediness of players. Do the players deserve to be paid. Hell yes. But there has to be structure to all of this. The free for all fee agency year in year out is only going to get worse.

I hope enough of these agreements blow up in schools/collectives faces that things come back to Earth a bit. Would absolutely love to see that $10 million QB at Michigan fail miserably for example. Nothing against him. But giving a kid who hasn’t played a down of college football that $$ is ridiculous.

If it's not in writing who's to say what was said vs what was understood?.... You need a contract, and besides, these NIL deals are not made by the school or the coaching staff.
Looks like no contract, but definitely a paper trail. At least enough proof that they can show they were promised compensation.:

Within the complaint, there are multiple text message exchanges between players and Hamilton and players and Will Cowen, an executive with one of Florida State’s NIL collectives.

The boycott referenced above happened during a practice before a game against Duke on February 17th. The players walked out of the gym and out of Hamilton’s practice over frustration of unpaid NIL compensation.

Hamilton assured the players they would be paid the following week, per the complaint. Florida State wound up losing to Duke 76-67. Players were worried over taxes, rent and car notes, per the complaint.

That does nothing about NIL. And it provides the same "free agency" after two years.

The NCAA has little legal remedy to reign this in.

Can the NFL tell players that they can't work OnlyFans if they want to be part of the NFL?
So one contract that pays them money limits them on other income?

Sure, once the schools start paying players directly they can stipulate anything they want in the contract. Then the player can decide to go somewhere else that doesn’t.

Not sure why a school would say, you come here you can’t do commercials for McDonald’s.

Since only the big ten and sec likely can pay the max direct from their own coffers I don’t see other conferences agreeing to shut down everything else.

I don’t watch our men’s basketball team other than a minute here or there now. The bowl game isn’t must see TV anymore - I will maybe catch half of it. NIL/Pay for play and the portal ruined college sports. I knew I was going to hate it but it’s even worse than I imagined. People contributing their hard earned money to these selfish kids…I don’t get it when there are people who could use the help more than a D1 athlete. I can’t name a single football recruit for next year…because I barely give a damn.

It's pretty common for organizations to have some sort of poor image clause in their hiring/firing as long as they aren't being fired for being a protected class or the sort.

This is why we see teachers getting canned for having onlyfans.

I’m in a similar boat. I’m watching the Iowa game today to spend time with my brother and his family. The portal and NIL have ruined my interest. Until there is some regulation I really have very little interest in college sports.

Can players where different shoes from their sponsor. Can they stitch their sponsor on the jersey?

I think it is time for schools to push back in a huge way. They absolutely can take pieces of things and have restrictions. It is their brand and their platform. This idea that the ncaa and schools can't put any restrictions in place is nonsense. Take it to court.

Because I want all this stuff fixed. Written contracts that are legally binding seem to be the only thing that can happen to save this whole thing from collapse.
That include financial penalties for transfers or sitting out a bowl game. Capture some of that NIL revenue from advertising.

The athletes should get paid but it has reached a level of ridiculous in an incredibly short amount of time

What are players doing that infringe on the schools or their brands?

This went to court and the NCAA lost.

That has been ruled on in the courts as well.

My interest in college sports took a hit when listening to people talking about "donating" money to a collective to maybe entice a recruit or transfer to sign with a team. I would rather keep that money for myself instead of maybe watching someone talentedly utilizing a ball. Now we have super (tv contract) conferences.

Bring back the “sit out a year when transferring clause” and see what happens.

4 year contract. If you want to transfer and break the contract you sit a year.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. This ends in a second division where kids sign away their NIL for scholarship compensation.

Last year FSU and this year Marshall are examples of players walking away from the “game/responsibilities” and the results of said walkout.
As others have posted, I am just a NY minute away from having no interest in the games that have been such a part of my life.

Traveling North on the 95 in Jerja, we saw a billboard advert for an “injury” law firm featuring a pick of Marvin Jones, Jr.
I couldn’t tell the jersey at a quick glance, just that it was reddish in tint.
It could have been UGA or FSU.
