A True Fran Gem

Worst thing that could have happened was them winning the BIG10 tourney...people thought he was a decent coach for a bit. The best player in the country basically doesn't touch the ball for huge swaths of the game.

He barely looked at the rim for huge swaths of the game. Was more interested in getting Rebraca paint touches.

Sure. Blame Fran for poor shooting.

Maybe the defense on out of bounds plays by Richmond

The BTT was double edged sword....it got Fran out of chit house for being 5-10 in his 11 years prior....but they expent all their emotional energy and guys like JBO and CMAC went out on a crusade against their perceived haters instead of leading the team.

I've always judge Fran on his accomplishment....12 years and at least he finally won a BTT...but no sweet16's...in 12 years at Iowa or 26 years of head coaching. He is not heading for Hall of Fame.

That is a team you shoot bad against and still beat by 10 if you are good team. Zero intensity and fire. I can understand that for the first couple tv timeouts but come on. You just sit there looking confused and never rip in to them as people get blown past for layups?

This. Where was the intensity and fire from the weekend? They run out of gas? (Very possible)

Sure seemed like Richmond got most of the loose balls by simply out hustling Iowa. Poor effort all around, and JBO didn’t belong on the court. Blown by over and over again.

Excuses are for Wusses. Shoot the gd ball even half-ass and you move on.

They did not bring the intensity you have to play with to win when you don't shoot well. They shot horrible but still could have won if they would have played with more urgency. They don't call it March Madness for nothing.

Can't win shooting like that. How many shots did Fran miss? That is on the players and not the coach! The only real head shaker was defense out of bounds. Rebacca was a head turner and Keegan did too. They no better.

Nah.. These are 20 year olds that just had 4 days to recover from their last game. Richmond was in exactly the same situation.
Yes, which comes to my ultimate point. Fran's teams are some of the most mentally soft teams I have ever witnessed. I'll give him credit for the late season play and BTT this year, but in general it is a problem every year. Teams take on the traits of their coach.

Player grades today.
Pat: B He was pretty decent for what we need out of him
Keegan: C- Not aggressive enough and poor 3 point shooting. He did score at the end so it’s hard to give someone with 21 and 9 too bad of a grade. He disappeared for too long.
Kris: D- awful shooting
JBO: D-. Made 2 3s so I won’t give him an F
Connor D: did he do anything?
Perkins: D , head up his ass
Joe T: C, not much to go on
Rebraca: D+ head up ass
Sanford: C- terrible shooting but seemed to try unlike most the team.
Fran: F, he just sucks . No adjustments, poor subbing, another choke job

Coach K and Bill Bilichik should get zero credit for their teams successes. They weren't out there shooting the ball or catching the passes.

It's the Jimmie's and Joe's and always has been. Unfortunately we got Jill and Jane today.

Quit insulting Jill and Jane. Junior high teams play better defense though down the stretch that what we played.

Actually, he IS the one you blame. It’s one and done, folks. You can’t keep chucking up three’s and hope to shoot your way out of a slump. That’s not a luxury you have in a tournament format. We shot 50% on all other shots. You change the game plan. That’s on the coach, not the players
3 pt shooting has been a major part of this team all year. JBo, Keegan, Kris, Tony and Sandfort were a combined 2-20 from 3.

So, a team that has hit 41% of their 3'd since Feb 1st should just give up on it? At what point do you tell the players to pass on good looks from 3, even though that's how they got here?

The difference is during the year you can afford to shoot your way out of a slump and hopefully right the ship for the next game. The difference here is you don’t get a next game. Great tournament coaches know you have to play for that game and that game only. They adjust. You don’t adjust, you go home. Can’t ignore the fact we were 50% inside the 3 point line.

I understand your point, but how long do you wait for someone to get hot? We waited, it didn’t happen.

In the flow of the game, there were some forced shots at the 3 line and some inside the 3 line. Beyond that, the Hawks got pretty good looks. Asking the team to pass on an open three when Keegan is buried in Spiders doesn't sound like a plan.

How do you adjust when the Murray's go 0-8 from 3? The inside guys usually had 2 or 3 guys on them anytime they got close to the rim. The 3's were the best shot available

You’re right, hex. Part of a coach’s job is to get his team mentally ready.

Richmond somehow wasn’t out of gas.

On empty now ... down 30 to Providence.
