Once upon a time I was a decent wrestler in the state of Iowa. The few fist fights I got in over the years, wrestling always bailed me out. I'm 69 now and I work out hard at the gym on a regular basis, ski, backpack, ect. But when I try the wrestling moves on my own, it's not there anymore. I guess in a street fight it might come back to me. Just curious about some of the older X wrestlers and how they have adapted. Thanks. Go Hawks!!!

I am also near your age and I have great advice for you. Stay away from street fights unless it is with someone over 80. I still wrestled around until age 50( nothing serious) until I wrestled my nephew and he dislocated my shoulder. Of course I was a 141pounder in college and he was wrestling 167 in the big 10. That ended my wrestling and have not done it since.

You have a good point there Thom67. The knees and shoulders would be the issue with me. Makes you realize how serious a sport it is ... the agility, the endurance and the strength. Glad I was a part of it once upon a time, and why I still follow the sport into my 70s. Thanks for the feedback. Go Hawks!!!

I'm no spring chicken but not close to 70. The only thing I recall from some of the yahoo's (Friends) that wanted to wrestle from time to time in the last 10 years or so (couple of cocktails, watching a meet or talking about the sport and the "good ol days"), was it didn't take long to finish a couple of takedowns or whatever, but every bone in my body was stiffer than hell for the next 3 days! For about 30 seconds of "action". Definitely not worth it...................and no medals were awarded. ;)

I think I can help you gentleman with some sage advice from my beloved grandmother God rest her soul. She once told me that "age is just a number":) but then followed it up with "But your body will tell you it is hell getting old" ;)! I am only in my 40's now but I am 100% sure that truer words may have never been spoken.

I am 55 and until recently my wrestling background served me well, but only a fool does not acknowledge the passing of time. will have 30 years in shortly and am no longer required to engage in such things, leave that to the young pups.

I'm 21 and I already get a lot more sore than in high school. Getting old is hard on the body. Lol:D

Your mind needs to catch up age wise. No earthly reason to be fighting and who knows if the other guys is packing. Your head can do stuff your back can't.

Note to self: contrary to previous assumption, wrestling meets are a good place to pick fights.

Do you have any NCAA eligibility left? Basically you have five (5) years to complete four (4). Hawkeyes need (but not desperate) for weights 141 lbs. and 165 lbs. If you can make either of the weights and answer to eligibility issue is yes, please contact Tom Brands, Head Coach, University of Iowa Wrestling Program, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa 52242. Good Luck!

You must've been living under a rock for the past 8 months. We have a national champion in Brody Grothus at 141.

I don't think I would last very long against Brody on the mat. Heck, the workouts at the gym are beating me up, despite the muscle gain. Working out at 50 was sure easier then age 69. Go Hawks!!!!

the instincts never go away.
keep up the good fight!

After 3 months of retirement my wife and I decided I needed something to do so I decided to take a class at the local community college called karate- All ages allowed. So I plopped down the simoleons for the uniform and the white belt and my karate experience began. Stretches went well... note to self- never underestimate the strength of youth.

I forgot to add that on my first actual spar I got slammed in the solar plexus, lost my wind and proceeded to do a beautiful slide by and took the kid down. My wrestling muscle memory did kick in.

Dang, bunch of old farts around here. Jk

39 here. I wrestle my boys all the time. i love it.

There is only one thing worse than getting older.
Not getting older.
Although getting older with ruined shoulders is a close second.

I'm 50 and wrestled in high school, I can tell you that wrestling has helped me out quite a few times when people decided that they'd rather fight than go to jail.

I wasn't undefeated wrestling in high school, I am however undefeated "wrestling" with criminals
Me too. However, It has been a few years since my last street fight. Probably why I still workout at the gym on a regular basis ... if I ever had to defend my gal friend in the back country and couldn't get to firearm quickly enough, between the wrestling background and the added strength I might have a chance. Go Hawks!!!

sure it is grapplefan we can sit here and say what they are doing wrong and remember how great we were.oh you meant participate in no not so much. I did a geezers tourney a few years back after first match I won pucked my guts out withdrew rest of way.
