Mike Gesell showed up tonight and played his best game as a Hawk. Delivered, scored, played D and made the O tick. Hell of a game Mike. Repeat please !!!!

Mike has been judged...for his lack of this or lack of that. He certainly has been a strength...his penetration shot has been much better (good thing he didn't stop doing it).

Save it, bob. Gesell has been rightfully critiqued and criticized although some people have been over the top. As long as one isn't personal in their criticism, then I see nothing wrong w/ discussing any player's strengths or weaknesses in their game. I think Gesell has played much better in the 2nd half of the season although he still has mental lapses. Yes, he has his limitations but he really has stepped up his play these last 2 months. He'll have to guard Kevin Pangos, a POY candidate for the WCC. Pangos is a baller and a scorer but I think Gesell can give him trouble. Better yet, maybe Clemmons will be the one giving him fits. It feels so good to be relevant in the NCAA tourney again.

Only that IMO he is a better defender and would cause more headaches for Pangos than Gesell. And that I like to see his patience as a bench player rewarded w/ more PT, esp. in the NCAA's. .
I've always said MG's greatest asset is his decision making on setting the tempo of the game. He simply knows when to run, when to pull back and this year he has been good at knowing when to attack the rim himself. He was great last night, White has been playing like a man on fire and when Pete gets going as well this team can and will beat anyone.

Like everyone on this team Gesell has been up and down his whole career. Not a great player but a good player getting better.
Great point. He's excellent at knowing when to push the ball and when to pull it back. It's kind of like Marble's strength was finishing on the fast break. Not sure there has been a Hawkeye player better at this than Marble.
MG played his best game of the year least night. A great game. If he continues to play like this Iowa has a shot to continue winning. He and Clemmons have a tough assignment guarding Pangos. The guy is quick, smart, very good passer, and doesn't turn the ball over. They are going to need to keep him from getting to the rim because the Zags bigs a huge, so Woody and Gabe are going to have their hands full.
MG has out played these and yet he still gets no credit.

It looks like you were referring to poster's criticisms of Gesell. What else would it be? You always overreact to even the slightest constructive criticism of Gesell. Yeah, Mikey played a helluva game but I can't decide if this game was better than the game he played against North Carolina. He took that game by throat and pretty much forced us to win. He's had some pretty good games but last night and NC stick out in my mind.

The same dictionary defines "good[/I]" as "of somewhat high but not excellent quality". I'm not sure how merely saying some one is not excellent but merely high quality is synonymous with bashing.
Maybe you disagree with my description of Mikey as not a great point guard. Great point guards at Iowa, at least in the last 40 years have been Lester, Armstrong and Woolridge. Excellent point guards would probably be Dean Oliver, Jeff Horner and maybe Kenny Arnold. I don't think most informed fans would describe Mike's play as substantially equivalent to those six guys, but you are entitled to a different opinion.
Moreover, while Mikey has had some nice games against top flight competition, and has really outplayed Yogi almost every time they've met, he's also played some poor games. The Minnesota and Penn State losses come readily to mind. Awful against Texas and Syracuse as I recall. That lack of consistently high quality play is what I call "up and down". What do you call it?
So feel free to defend players but you might want to target your defenses to posts that are actually bashing players.
