ATLANTA (WANF/Gray News) - Several employees previously fired from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been asked to come back.
About 180 CDC employees received emails on Tuesday rescinding their termination letters from last month, according to two federal health officials who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
AP reported the email said in part that “after further review and consideration,” the termination notices of the employees had been rescinded and asked them to return to work by Wednesday.
“You should return to duty under your previous work schedule. We apologize for any disruption that this may have caused,” the email said.
CNN reported one CDC official said some employees have responded and said they will not return due to instability at the agency. It is unclear how many of the employees asked to come back will return.
According to a statement obtained by WANF, the CDC is reinstating some probationary employees who were cut earlier this month.
In the statement, the CDC said emergency response positions such as the Public Health Associated Program and Laboratory Leadership fellows were the focus of their reinstatement.
A CDC senior official said the number of those reinstated is small compared to the number of employees laid off. More than 700 workers were cut from the CDC in February as part of the massive layoffs put into effect by the Trump administration.
