I think something overlook is mental illness and treating it. It seems easy to say lock em up and throw away the key, but if we don't get through to the real cause then it does us no good.

Totally agree with OP. Trumpism needs to be studied as the mental illness it is.
This is why states should be opening up more state-run mental health facilities, instead Terry Branstad closed the last remaining ones in Iowa.
The very same people that wanted the mental health institutions shut down now want them opened up again. That's okay, everyone f*cks up.

Treating mental illness appropriately would mean insurance companies would have to get on board and the State would have to 1) raise taxes to fund an expensive program, 2) the State will have to cut back on gifting its tax money to private businesses (also known as “picking winners”), or 3) a combination of both 1 and 2.
The other factor to consider is that nothing rankles an Iowa GOPer more than the State’s Human Services budget...after all, not that many kids starved to death in foster care over the past couple of years.

Yes, and it's a shame that Republicans consistently aim to cut funding for mental health treatment services and facilities.
