This whole Beathard situation baffles me. So many unanswered questions leaves me, and many others I assume, in the dark trying to figure out the truth. First off, did CJ ever get an MRI or professional opinion on what the injury is? Do we know with high certainty that it's just a severe groin pull? I know the coaches have been managing the games/play calls in a way to help CJ (heavy dose of running and relying on our defense). It almost feels as if the coaches and CJ know it's more serious but CJB is adamant on playing until he can't anymore, which is obviously a good and bad thing. His leadership and toughness rubs off on the other players and the toughness of this team is clearly evident. That's the part that makes me think letting CJ play, even if it's 50% health, is the best option.
The other side of me questions how much more damage he is doing to the injury. Say for example it is a sports hernia. The wisest option would have been to do the surgery after NW allowing him to recover during the bye week, maryland, and indiana and hopefully make it back after Indiana. This is just a hypothetical idea on if it was a sports hernia but from what it sounds like it isn't. With our defense playing so well and we are running the ball so much and effectively it does make me wonder how we would have faired if Beathard sat the maryland game and rest up this week too. I firmly believe we have the best chance to win even with a hobbled quarterback over TW, but I think we would have beaten Maryland without CJ. With Indiana's horrid defense I think we'd still beat them with TW just because of our defense and run game. I wouldn't oppose if CJ sat this week out but I definitely wouldn't call for that too happen.
Main thing is I just want some darn answers about the injury!!
There is a precedent at Iowa that sports hernias are dealt with in the offseason, and they haven't often resorted to surgery for them. There have probably been a lot of sports hernia injuries in the Iowa program that we never heard about. The only reason we are aware of CJs is because he's the QB and it is so clearly limiting his game. And even at that, we aren't sure what exactly his injury is. I'm still betting on sports hernia though.
