Utah State is NOT a bad team. We were slightly favored to win and obviously came up short last night.

Guess what? This won't be the only loss of the season; there's gonna be more.

With every game, no matter the team I am rooting for, I go in with the expectation that my team MIGHT lose. Shit happens in sports; favorites get upset.

And in an 8-point IOWA loss to Utah State (77-69):

Traore, Dix and Payton (right wrist) were all banged up, which helps to explain Payton going 1-13 from three and Dix going 0-4 from three.

As a Team, these #s are hard to explain, but again, shit happens in sports:

5-26 (19%) from 3

8-16 (50%) from the Foul Line

16 turnovers.

The shooting, especially from 3 and FT line were the difference. We won the turnover battle though got killed on the glass.

Payton/Dix have to be better.
Freeman and Brock were solid.
Need a little more Traore
Need less Pryce and Dembele
Need more Thelwell
Koch was not great but has a high ceiling

Payton & Josh are battling wrist injuries, which I think explains their shooting woes.

Traore was seen getting his leg treated.

Yes, there will be more losses. I do think social media and sports message boards aren't based in reality, so you get extreme reactions.

That said, Iowa was in it for most of the game, and as noted the FT and 3Pt shooting were garbage. I also felt like offensively Iowa was disjointed; not much of a flow.

Because fans are fickle.

After Fran sat Keegan Murray in favor of Connor, I was ready for the Fran era to be over. I still am.

The offense will be easier to fix.

The defense travels.

I’d like to think getting healthier would do the trick. Just too many years of the same product on the court doing the same thing. What’s the constant?

Usually the constant is a lot of points scored & given up. Now we are seeing much better defense. Who da thunk? ;)

Payton & Dix, when healthy, would never shoot a combined 1-17 (6%) from three like they did last night.

Setting unrealistic expectations is part of the "losing their minds" issue. At least with some.
For my part, this is more or less the team I expected.
They look to be a middling B1G team. I thought before the season somewhere in the 9-12 range. Haven't seen anything so far to change my mind.

If Payton is battling a wrist injury then why play him so many minutes (instead of Traore for example) or encourage him to take 10+ 3s last night. Those are all wasted possessions and killed this team last night

It is how they lost, and nothing changes year to year with McCaffery. Fans are very tired of his lack of evolution in game coaching. Not to mention that Iowa/McCaffery never show up in NCAA tournament. That is why fans want him gone as soon as possible. JMO

Then they should not be shooting as much (Sandfort) and/or not playing. Dix quit shooting the three because of his injury last night. But you cannot have 40% of your starters not being able to shoot. You have to have a plan B. IMO.

Injuries might explain poor outside shooting, but rebounding and free throw shooting to be much better. Injuries shouldn't impact that much.

There’s more effort on that end of the court for sure. Just don’t see that same increase on the glass, both ends.

Ya gotta want it and I’m not seeing that game in and game out. There are no more Eddie’s, Reggie’s or Greg’s that work the glass the way they did at 6’8” or less. Too bad, losses could be wins if that mindset showed up again.

The constant………………. Is Fran. Same game plan, same results.

It makes no sense.

I admire Payton’s efforts to play through it, but Fran needed to sit him. I gave up a long time ago, though, trying to figure Fran out.

I think Fran just has to sit players (read Payton) that have injuries that impact the game substantially...if we have nothing better on the bench, they he needs to recruit better.

I think there's a lot of Fran fatigue. Lack of tourney success during his tenure has been a big part of that. Overall the program just feels really stale right now.
^ That! That exactly

And it's not "fire everyone!!!!!!" after every loss, Franimals. Its knowing the reasons for the loss, almost every single time. Horrid shooting from behind the arc & at the FT line, and no adjustments to manufacture offense & points in other ways to overcome those extremely low shooting %s. Also, the rebounding was atrocious and allowed USU (or whoever) a lot of 2nd looks - or more - after misses.

Only difference last night was they are actually trying on the defensive end, now - aside from failing to limit the opposition's 2nd chances.

Unless I’m reading it wrong Torvik had Iowa giving up offensive rebounds on 40% of the chances. That’s terrible defense.
Utah got 15 offensive rebounds and Iowa got 22 defensive rebounds, so yeah, 40 percent and that is awful.

Contrast that with Utah getting 32 defensive rebounds to Iowa's 9 offensive rebounds.

The bottomline is you can't get defensive stops without securing the rebound. Iowa has a bunch of guys that don't go after the basketball with enough effort.

And that also forget any bit of blocking out.
