Aidan Shaw Taking Official Visit to Iowa on June 22

This is the kind of athlete we need to continue to try and get. I know it's not easy and we have some stiff competition. Also not going to turn it into a pro Fran or bash Fran thread. Glad he's on an official visit and hope for the best.

Fran has always gone after players like this. I'm not directing that comment at you, but I think it's important to reiterate that point. I wish Fran had better luck landing more athletic guards, we'll see what the future holds, but I don't fault his effort. As many have pointed out, Fran does a fabulous job of identifying talent early on and then unfortunately other schools take notice.

Garza, Cook, and Gessell were all highly rated and highly recruited out of state kids. Woodbury and Jok were Iowa kids (very highly rated) who were recruited by schools like North Carolina (Roy noted for being a great recruiter) and Wisconsin for Jok.......
First, you are killing Fran here. lol. 3 non-Iowa players spanning 11 years... good God!

Second, most high major offers for Jok evaporated after his injury. That’s just a fact. Fran took a calculated risk sticking with it and it paid off. Does he deserve credit for that? Sure. But a different kind of credit than you are trying to give him.

Nobody wants to accept that a 62 year old guy who has spent 11 years here has already shown us what he’s capable of — what he’s all about.

I understand it. Fans hope. That’s what they’re good at. I just don’t agree with it.

Trying to spin this guy as some kind of Ace recruiter is, frankly, embarrassing. I’m embarrassed for you.

Give him the credit that he deserves. Above all else, Fran is a smart recruiter. He understands his situation and does the due diligence to recruit well enough to remain competitive in one of the best basketball leagues in the country. He’s done all this while remaining squeaky clean. Not even an appearance of impropriety in 11 years. That’s a valuable skill set in and of itself, and it’s something the program should be proud of.

I tend to agree - my summary view of Fran's recruiting might look like this:
  • Very good at identifying talent in the 100-250 rankings that can play far above their ranking, and doing it early on. Misses on some but hits on a lot higher percentage than most others.
  • Very ethical and above board in his recruiting style
  • Burdened with a program that does not have a lot of recent history, demographic or facility advantages compared to many other P5 programs
  • Favors identifying HS kids and developing them over taking transfers, for better or worse
  • Very protective of his players and generally liked by his players
  • Given we can't get players who can do everything tends to focus on offensive length and skill and offensive efficiency, which is player friendly. Covers up defensive efficiencies with mixing defenses with partial success.
  • Lacks the assistant who is an uber-recruiter and can land Top 100 out of state talent. Ideally with more recent success our out of state success will start to grow.

That last paragraph is an area that we agree on....

"Trying to spin this guy as some kind of Ace recruiter is, frankly, embarrassing. I’m embarrassed for you." This sentence.....wow. Where did I ever, have I ever, said that Fran is an "Ace recruiter"? Take your time, go search all of my posts...have never said that. If you think I was trying to "spin" that he is an Ace recruiter, I know from reading your stuff that you are smarter than that. You were either in a fit of frustration or need an adjustment to the meds? Last but not least...go ahead and be embarrassed for me. I'm not embarrassed in the least for pointing out the falsities in Iowa fans saying the Fran never gets high level recruits-whiffing on all of them (your reading comprehension is clearly good enough to know that, if your emotions don't over ride your thinking).

I am not disagreeing with you, but I would give Fran a touch more credit in his out of state recruiting. You forget that some of the guys who didn't pan out at Iowa were actually decent recruiting gets at the time. Just to paint a full narrative:

Brandon Hutton - had offers from West Virginia and Wisconsin, (even had a crystal ball prediction to wisconsin). Two good programs.

Andrew Fleming - had offers from Memphis, Florida, Vandy, and Auburn.

Trey Dickerson -had offers from Arkansas, Washington, Nebby, and interests from some other top schools.

Uhl - shockingly had offers from Maryland, Boston College, Miami, Minnesota, NW, and Penn State.

Nunge - had offers from Vandy, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Creighton, and Nebby.

Even some of the lesser recruits had other P5 offers.
Wagner - had offers from Minnesota and Texas Tech,
Moss - had an Auburn offer
Ellingson - somehow had an offer from Missouri

Now of course none of these guys were top 100, "Star" recruits, nor did any of these guys have Blue Blood or even second tier offers, but Fran did beat out other schools that regularly sport NCAA tournament teams. And Rebraca and Bowen both had good offer sheets from out-of-state.

On the other hand, listing all these duds (with the exception of Nunge and Moss), shows that Fran can really whiff on talent evaluation and struggles finding pieces that fit together. Most of these guys, and almost the entire 2014-15 classes in general, really set the program back.

Again, not trying to say Fran is a stud recruiter by any means. Just trying to paint a fuller picture on his out-of-state recruiting.

Maybe I read a little too much into your post.

Apologies if so.

I just get frustrated when people inflate aspects of the program out of all proportion and reality because these are usually the same folks who tear it down and denigrate it out of all proportion and reality when things aren’t going the way they think they should be going.

I’m not saying you do this. I’m saying that when I see it (or think I see it), it tends to set me off.

I identify with that completely.....we really aren't that far apart in our opinions....I think we actually see things pretty similarly. I might lean more to the positive side and you might lean a little the other way...but both within the realm of reality. maybe

That's a very good and fair evaluation.
