Who’s that homer that posted AJ Green is one of the best guards in the country??

GIRL BYE! I said he wouldn’t even be one of the best in the BIG. Those inflated stats are against MVC competition and would not apply to a power conference like BIG.

Low and behold they go and lose to a 10-10 SIU team . Called it!

Feel better now? Very irrelevant post.

Green is a really nice player. Let’s not pretend we couldn’t use him. But he chose another path. He’s fine where he is. He’ll have a really good career there.

I'm not saying he's a bad player. I just don't think he would be all world playing in the BIG against real competition and defenses like Rutgers, Michigan St., Penn St., IL, Purdue, etc...

“All world”, a meaningless nebulous term. AJ would be a significant contributor to IA this year. Don’t kid yourself.

Well duh. We are very short in the back court with all the injuries!

However, if everyone returns next year who wouid you see him starting over given that JBo is healthy and back to normal? That’s my point.

.

So we’re onto next year now? Well beyond you’re initial post certainly. You said nothing even close to that.

Next year? I’m not so sure. We will be loaded next year no doubt. He’d be a great option of the bench bringing great 3 point shooting, mid range game, and solid defense.

Should have kept this one to yourself.

Definitely not a coherent argument.

Green is a very comparable talent to Weiskamp and Frederick.

I would never fault a kids for playing at a good mid-major program. They still face decent competition, still have shot to make the tourney, and, more importantly, still have a shot to make a tourney run. Remember, UNI has been to a sweet sixteen this century and Iowa has not.

Also the "level of competition" argument is a little overstated. If you ball out you ball out. Look at how many NBA Stars came from mid-majors. See:
  • Damien Lillard,
  • Stephen Curry,
  • Paul George,
  • Kawhi Leonard,
  • and second tier guys like Gordon Haward, C.J. McCollum, Pascal Siakim, Paul Millsap.
And look at older players like:
  • Steve Nash,
  • David Robinson,
  • Scottie Pippen,
  • John Stockton,
  • Karl Malone,
  • Walt Frazier,
  • Larry freaking Bird,
  • Dr. J,
  • Bill Russell.
These are just the BIG names. There are plenty other quality guys who played in the mid major.

Don't rip on the dude for playing somewhere he can shine.

you are using a team loss to justify a position on an individual player? A game in which said player was injured?

sounds rational.

Totally agree with Fran Con. Pretty sure we were recruiting him as a Freshman or Sophomore? Valley is a solid conference, obviously not in the same caliber night in and night out as the B1G. Im a big fan of JBo, but do you think if he had to carry the load the way Green does at UNI he could physically hold up at his size? I’m going to enjoy our season but also appreciate that Green is a very good player.

Yeah....because anyone who plays on a mid-major can’t possibly be a good player for a P5 team. Steph Curry padded his stats against other mid-major teams. He was a fraud.

And.....all those great P5 teams NEVER lose to teams that are .500 or worse.

Real nice post. Your intelligence really shines on this one.

That would have been awful to have Ja Morant last year and all of his inflated mid-major stats.

You should leave Iowa City once in a while. It’s a big beautiful world. And oddly enough, good basketball played in many places.

Relax. Was it an overstated opinion on AJ Green? Most would say yes. Worth being upset about? Most would say no.

AJ is a really good basketball player. Stop lying to yourself. He is on the same level as CJF imo, if not a little bit better. He can score from all three levels and would benefit at Iowa where he wouldn't have to play point guard. Sure we wouldn't average 25 PPG in the conference, but we would have him over BE, which is an EASY upgrade, and if you don't see that you're naive. Also, FWIW, BE averaged 9 points per game on a middle of the road MVC team

AJ would absolutely start over JBo, and that’s not a knock on Bohannon. Green was a 4 star top 75 recruit that had offers to Virginia, Clemson, Ia State, and Minnesota among others. I don’t know if he would score 20+ in big ten play, but his numbers would still be very good.

Green is a good player and definitely would help the Hawks right now.

That said, the OP's intent (as jumbled as it was conveyed) to call out someone who called Green one of the best PGs in the country is fair because Green isn't close to that level and it was really someone just overrating a kid because he's from Iowa. He's a very good player and still young, but not there yet.

Green is certainly a great player, but he has to be on that team. He has attempted 285 shots this season. Fredrick has attempted 114 and shoots a much better percentage. CJ is our third option. Green is their first. I think I'll stick with CJ, who I suspect will be an even bigger impact player the longer he's here

If he wanted to call out the other person he could have went about it a little better. All he had to do was quite the dude and post in this thread

Oh yeah, this thread is dumb and how it was expressed was really poor.

That said, since we have the thread, I would love to have AJ on the Hawks for potentially the next 2 years but here we are.
Agree. He’s a damn good player and the Hawks would absolutely be a better team with him.

I don't know man. He would help Iowa State alot. Wish he would have picked the Clones when he was down to them and UNI.

Not really. I think UNI uses AJ too much. Berhow and Phyfe are great offensive options for them.

UNI’s offensive efficiency is way up this year, but there is stilll too much watching AJ.

With shooting percentages that works in CJs favor as AJ is taking more poor percentage shots. With ppg obviously the opposite.

They're very similar players honestly.

He didn't lose the game all by himself, bro.

Id take his NFL pay check.....

Man I really hope AJ sticks / sees some time in the Big Show - may not happen this season yet. Would be a very cool and a major boon for the state of Iowa and UNI basketball.

Just googled it, and he apparently is on track to become the first UNI player to play in the NBA. They have had a couple of guys drafted, Bill McCoy and Pete Spoden, back when there several rounds of the draft, but don’t think they made it.
Sorry if this has already been discussed.
