And since the Akron/Nebbie game officially started, he wants to be paid according to the contract ($1.17 Million). Of course, the Nebraska AD wants to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars less than that.

How embarrassing and cowardly of Nebby.

Akron (2-0), unlike Nebby, is afraid of no one. Akron's nonconference schedule: AT Nebraska; AT Northwestern; AT Iowa State.

Nebraska shuns Akron Zips to play Bethune-Cookman in makeup game

CLEVELAND, Ohio - It's official. Akron's makeup game with Nebraska will not happen. The Cornhuskers announced Thursday they have replaced Akron Zips with an Oct. 27 game against Bethune-Cookman, an FCS team.

That leaves Akron scrambling to find a replacement game, most likely to be played in December.

The Zips' season opener Sept. 1 at Nebraska was postponed due to lightning following several delays just after the game began. When no arrangements could be made satisfactorily to play the following day, the Zips returned to Akron, but without a check.

"We showed up, we kicked off, we played,'' Akron AD Larry Williams said Thursday night.

Since then, Nebraska has shied away from paying Akron the $1.17-million due from the contract.

"That's all in the hands of the lawyers now,'' Williams said.

Nebraska will pay Bethune-Cookman $800,000. Nebraska AD Bill Moos told the Omaha World-Herald he is willing to cover Akron's expenses for making the trip to Lincoln. "We have to find a number," Moos said.

There was initially talk of the two teams playing at the end of the regular season, in December, if one or both teams could need a victory to become bowl eligible. But that is now off the table.

Scott Frost, first-year coach for the now 0-2 Huskers, said the December date was bad considering Nebraska expected to be playing in the Big Ten championship game.

Williams sees it differently.

"They didn't want to compete at our level,'' he said.

The Zips are undefeated (2-0) are coming off a 39-34 victory over Northwestern, also a member of the Big Ten. And this week will play at Iowa State (0-2) from the Big 12 Conference.

Still, the Nebraska game is what the Zips wanted to play, for the national exposure as well as the opportunity and belief they could pull the upset.

"Severe disappointment,'' Williams said.

* Nebby is not honoring a contract
I wouldn't jump the gun on that point. I haven't seen the contract between the two universities but it is reasonable to expect that there is a legitimate legal dispute regarding the payout amount. If I recall correctly, no snaps were taken in that game.

In any event, the contract terms will govern the resolution of the dispute. Without reviewing the contract, I don't think you can conclude that Nebraska has failed to honor the terms.

The Akron AD seems to think they honored the contract and should be paid in full, based on this:

They kicked off correct? But no return? Not sure when the game officially starts...

With all of those home sellouts, I'd think they could cover the $1.17 million. Did the fans get refunded? Do their tickets get them into the make-up game?

I understand the Akron AD thinks that way. He has 1.1 million reasons to do so. Nebraska's AD thinks differently. Hence, a dispute.

Personally, I think Nebraska should make the full payout or at least a substantial portion of the agreed amount.

pretty sure the fans did not get refunded anything

I am guessing the Neb AD wants the $1.17M that they were to pay Akron allocated this way:

$800,000 to Bethune Cookman
$317,000 to Akron to cover their travel expenses

$1,117,000 total of above

That way Nebby is not out a dime.

Cheap, unethical bastards!

The game kicked off. I wonder if that met the contractual obligations.

Moving forward I bet the money will have to be guaranteed or these non power 5 schools will look elsewhere.

Pretty funny watching nebraska lose another season. Besides the record, the weather providing an asterisk, the legal battle, Frost's depressing start - what else could go wrong to add the cherry on top?

Soooo then if they collect again from fans for the make-up game, they'd be doing some double dipping. I'd assume that season ticket holders would be "given" their normal tickets for this make-up game.

Nebraska said from the beginning there will be no refunds but said to hold on to your tickets as they are trying to reschedule someone else.

Although... Akron is technically making some bank, if they collect $1.17, don't have to play the game. Then schedule another payout game to collect more from another P5 team.

No matter how you look at the legalities of the situation it is not a good look for Nebraska. They look like they are cheap. I don't like to give Jamie Pollard much credit but he did pay South Dakota state.

But they can't do it this year unless one of the teams affected by the hurricane will play them. If Akron really wanted to play Nebraska in a make up game, I don't understand why Nebraska scheduled Bethune-Cookman. It does seem crappy.

I agree its bad publicity for Nebraska. Just skip an installment payment to former coach Bo Pelini or Mike Riley, I'm sure Nebraska fans could get behind that.

These guys got on a plane at 1AM because they didn’t want to sleep in separate locations in Lincoln and were concerned about more rain on Sunday. I didn’t blame them at the time but they’d have gotten all that money- and their shot- if they had just stayed in town.

Now they’re pushing it!

These guys got on a plane at 1AM because they didn’t want to sleep alone and/or in separate locations in the scary metropolis of Lincoln. I didn’t blame them at the time.

Now they’re pushing it!
At least they had that option. In Lames it would have been multiple stagecoaches!

If I was you, I wouldn't worry about Akron. I would be more concerned about what is about to happen in the Big House. It won't be fun for you.

What a useful perspective from a guy who’s main team can blow a promising season in less than 24 hours by losing to Wisconsin. How’s that rivalry been going, something like 1 for 6 since 2009? There’s always the 14th trip to the Bloomin’ Onion bowl if things don’t work out...

Is it nervousness that sends you into a Huskers/Zips thread to help keep Husker fans focused on Michigan?

It will be interesting to see see how this would be viewed by a court if it comes to that. They each were willing to play a date the other wasn’t. Im not sure what options Nebraska had for altering the kick off but it was forecast for days that there could be issues that night so it would be reasonable for them to have considered it. It will be interesting to see how this plays out and how it affects future games.

braska offered to play them the next day and akron didn't want to play, not that I can blame them for wanting to spend 2 straight days in that hell hole :)

braska should pay them though. they are probably paying that much to 37 coaches this year, so what is another mill? it is chump change in the big picture. consider it a(RARE) cost of doing business and move on.

it's all about what the contract says.
either way, if I am a nobody school looking to get paid for a single away game....I'm looking everywhere else but braska

Face it, Nebraska would kill for an offer to the Bloomin' Onion Bowl this year even if it means taking a game against Butane Cookingman.

Obviously. I don’t see much bowling this year. All I really want is for Adrian Martinez to heal up and the fan base/hyperactive media to learn patience and get some perspective

That is certainly reasonable, a new coach needs time to get his program in place. Unfortunately, I don't think the Husker media will be as understanding or patient; I predict it will get a little rocky at some point. Martinez looks the part, the kind of athlete to build an offense around.
