Album Covers

"Bitched and bitched"? Lol, no. I made my point and then only brought it up again when assholes like Ram and WWJD chose to insult me for stating my opinion. If it wasn't for their ad hominem attacks I would have mentioned the photo exactly one time.

I do, however, think it's adorable that you guys honestly believe the photographer was making a statement about the achievement of human creativity and that the toy plane represents the fruit of the tree of knowedge and the topless girl represents the fruit of the tree of life.

I'm probably just an idiot for thinking that the real motivation behind the photo was 'Hey, I bet if we put a topless 11-year-old girl on the cover we would stir up some controversy and sell a lot of records'.
All I said was that I never had any real opinion. I've never analyzed it. YOU'RE the one who has brought all of this conjecture as to exactly what it is. It is definitely artistic because of the concept and context. There's really no denying that. It may not be art that you appreciate, approve of, or understand, but that's a lot of "art", if you get down to it.

You have introduced all of this expert opinion as truth. The plane is a dick, the girl is underage and therefore perverted, and anyone who doesn't see that is a pervert enabler. You're offended by it. I'm not. If you see it as phallic, okay. It's a lot like reading a novel. Different people have different interpretations.

I will absolutey agree with the idea that they went with it for the controversy it would generate and attempt to get the record exposure! That sounds like Robert Stigwood all day long! Selling records is a business. But, the person who made the cover is, was, and always will be, considered an artist.

Seidemann was specifically commissioned to create the album cover. It's not like he took the photo 10 years earlier and Clapton picked it out of a portfolio.

And I never said I was offended by it. I said I didn't see any artistic merit to it and I think he just wanted to stir up controversy to sell records. YOU decided that I was offended by it.

It's curious that you believe every word of Seidemann's explanation and reject any other interpretation, yet you take the liberty of deciding what I think.

If you're not offended by it, then you're going to one helluva lot of trouble to argue about something that doesn't bother you at all.

Thank you for finally acknowledging he was an artist. They don't commission plumbers and carpenters to create album covers.

Why shouldn't I take Seidemann's word for it? He created it.

I made one comment about the photo and it would have ended there if not for the barrage of personal attacks from you and others. If you weren't so determined to be a prick, this discussion would have ended on page 2.

I never once said Seidemann isn't an artist. Your reading comprehension sucks ass. I didn't disparage his entire body of work, I said I didn't see any artistic merit to THAT ONE PHOTO out of the countless thousands of photos he has taken in his career.

Once again you're putting words in my mouth.

Yeah.. you're right. You've been a complete gentleman the whole time.

Get your last word in so you can feel like you "won."

A fun album cover thread and this was how it died.

Be better, HORT.
Lol. Yeah, I should be ashamed of myself for not recognizing the artistic merit of a topless 11-year-old girl holding a phallic symbol on an album cover.

What ever happened to Ram anyway? Did he get banned?

I wasn't really talking about you, just HORT in general.

I guess someone missed my Free @strummingram campaign.

There were two versions of the album cover. Three days after the first cover was released, the band's plane crashed in Mississippi. The albums were "recalled" by MCA, and replaced with a cover without the fire. I actually bought the original at Oz records on Peachtree St. in Atlanta the day it was released. I still have the original, unopened vinyl album.
