Alford Entertainment

To add to that, UCLA doesn't have a great basketball tradition. Name me 3 great UCLA basketball players. When Steve Lavin is your greatest coach, you've got problems.

Mike Warren, Keith Wilkes, and Ed O'Bannion.

Hope your post was tongue/cheek.

How do you fire Crean after this year, unless they completely flame out in the tournament?

Isn't this like his best season yet?

Their AD also seems like he really hates change. He stuck by Kevin Wilson longer than most would have, and then gave him a huge extension after a still fairly crappy season (6-7, defense as bad as ever).

Yes, I get that their football program is historically terrible, but still. If IU wins or ties for the regular season league title, or even finishes 2nd or 3rd, how in the hell do you fire that guy?

Ballsy and Brainless hire by that A.D.

It was a head scratcher when he brought Alford on board and Alford with no Craig Neal is a recipe for disaster. Can't blame Steve for wanting the Bruins' job but at a place like tradition rich UCLA, wouldn't there have been another option with another big name coach?

Dude, everyone knows that UCLA is a football school. Just wait til Alford actually gets to coach somewhere that values basketball.

Like New Mexico???
He had success, but again it was in a Mid-Major conference. Alford should of stayed and could of had quite the dynasty at UNM.

UCLA does have a unique situation there. Their recruiting base is good, a ton of history/championships, had the 5th most former players in the NBA on opening day and lots of resources.....but their fan support is complete crap. The LA fan scene is a tough one as no one really shows up unless you are really good.

In defense of Alford, it is hard to find and recruit any decent players in the LA area. :(

Appears your sarcasm meter is broken too. I will explain.

When Alford left Iowa, he complained it was a football school and that was part of why he left and didn't reach higher expectations.

Now that he is at arguably the most tradition rich, easy to recruit school, and having a rough go of it, we are being sarcastic that all he needs is to go to a great basketball school.

It's much less fun when you have to explain it.

And newspapers are hard to find anymore that the fans can sit behind & pretend the other team is not worthy of notice.

Oh, wow, you really couldn't detect a hint of sarcasm in that post?

I think your sarcasm meter is broken.

No I was more stating that New Mexico is a decent football school and he had it rolling there. I understood what you meant.

I think he is a good Mid-major coach, who can get the right level of recruits for his style. When he goes big time against better coaches and better players, you see his real coaching. Throwing players under the bus and an overall prick. Glad to see him struggle at UCLA.

this thread could have been so good but alas......so......painful......

That moment when you had respect for someone, then realized they lack the ability to recognize Super Duper Obvious sarcasm. Holy smokes! Is this real life?

That it? Virginia has been a better bball school.

Alford should have stayed put at NM..The fans there adored him. All he had to do is beat up the confernce patsies ,game the RPI and win a tourney game and he was golden. My biggest fear is after he gets fired at UCLA he will get an ESPN gig and he'll be calling our games..GAG

Did he pay for it? Is it true that he'd really go around town & expect free food?

If you had to feed Tanya you'd look for some free food too.
