Alford Entertainment

Yeah, he paid for it. It was about 12 years ago, though, so I don't remember how.
But he had a track record in Iowa city of expecting free or significantly discounted stuff like his homeowner insurance, rental of John Deere lawnmower and home improvements to name a few.

A buddy of mine told me that Alford walked into a hardware
store in Iowa City and asked for a free Toro riding lawnmower.
He told them that he was the Iowa Hawkeyes basketball coach.

Let me correct you, he said " I am THE Iowa basketball coach". He tried the same trick at the John Deere shop

He probably got that stuff in Indiana. He didn't know it was supposed to be any different.

Got to admit that it is probably hard for Stevie's players to not be distracted by the scenery on the UCLA campus.;)

I am not a big Alford fan but I have heard a couple of versions of this. First, I heard that he was told that Tom Davis had a deal with John Deere and went there trying to get a similar deal. I have also heard that he tried that with various different retailers in Iowa City. My guess is that it is probably somewhere in between. It is not uncommon for coaches to get some good deals. However, that was also his fatal flaw. He just didn't relate very well and rubbed people the wrong way. I could easily see this starting out somewhat innocent and then turn into "I'm Coach Alford". I have heard people say that these rumors were unfair and maybe they were, but he was also so arrogant that he built up ZERO goodwill from the state to forgive him for these types of things.

The only thing sadder than Alford's time at UCLA is the fact that people at Iowa still care... we had a coach 20x worse after Alford.

At least Steve was somewhat average. He should've never left New Mexico. He will get one more year at UCLA

I believe Stevie has a very good recruiting class coming in next year. Should buy him some time.
So he can prove early tournament exits with talented teams aren't just a fluke?

Did he pay for it? Is it true that he'd really go around town & expect free food?
This is not entirely accurate...it wasn't just food. He expected to get everything for free. Custom tailored suits, haircuts, flooring for his new house, lawn mowers, the list goes on.

Alford would have expected jus primae noctis if he thought he could get away with it.

Surprised he dragged himself out of the hot tub long enough to mow the lawn.:D
He was in the hot tub, but Tanya jumped in and displaced all the water which made the grass grow. Then Stevie boy had to go looking for a lawnmower for Tanya's "garden boy". Just a big circle. Then he had to go beg for insurance to cover the workers, etc, etc.

I remember while attending the Learfield golf outing every summer for the corporate radio sponsors Alford and Ferentz would each speak for about 5 minutes each before we carted up for the shotgun start.

Ferentz would always be there at least an hour early, milling around the golfers, chatting with everyone and posing for pictures. Kirk made himself available to anyone and was extremely cordial. Alford would show up about 10 minutes before his obligatory talk, and hang out in the pro shop to avoid being seen, then take off right afterward.

I don't know if he has some sort of social anxiety, or is just a smug ahole, or both.

This thread is entertaining, but not for the reasons the title states. Common knowledge people.
