Aaron Nagao, 133lb Freshman All-American (5th place) from MN, has entered the transfer portal. Would hope that the Hawkeyes can at least get their hat in the ring, but Mineo is hinting at Penn State being the landing spot, FWIW.

This would be a huge get for the Hawks. He would have better workout partners at Iowa than anywhere else. I hope he’s not afraid of DeSanto and Lee.

We need you to do a better job of hitting the Cali recruiting harder for us man. What does the HWC pay you for anyways? Better get on those Cortez brothers, and Zepeda while you're at it.
Gilroy is a long way from me. I’m tight with Nagao’s old BJJ coach and I used to be regular sparring partners with his old man ( his pops is a killer btw). Really good family. Aaron is a really likable, humble kid. His pops said that he’s been in contact with both PSU and Iowa. Kid has been training in BJJ since he was in grade school, savage top game and excellent scrambling are the result. His neutral offensive TD game is probably where he needs the most work.

OK, get on the horn and TALK IOWA UP!!!! It would seem like a no brainer to me with everything lining up for this kid!

Work out partners
New facility
Coaching
Connection with UFC which is HUGE if he considers that after college.
15K plus fans going nuts for him.

GET ON IT!!!

According to my sources, Aaron is taking 3 visits (PSU, Cornell and Iowa).

Great info. Thanks for sharing. What does BJJ stand for?

Genuinely curious, what are the Iowa connections within UFC? I would argue that American Top Team is the #1 MMA gym in the world and sent some very well respected guys to open the one in Pleasant Gap right out of State College.

Take a look at the women’s roster and you might see a familiar name
Hint please?

Didn't Miletich have a gym in Iowa at one point? Was legendary wherever it was.

Not sure exactly but OsU has probably been the most recognizable school within UFC. Iowa has Hughes, PSU has Davis.

EDIT: Always thought Hughes wrestled at Iowa. Apparently not.

If you're talking about Mir, that's not impressive. It's about as relative as me talking about Starocci.

Bella Mir is Frank Mir's daughter. I'm not sure the UFC deal had anything to do with it though since she signed before that was announced.

Daughter of former UFC Heavyweight champ - famously tapped out Brock Lesnar. Whose family happens to be pretty tight with the Ferrari family (allegedly), who happens to be pretty tight with Jorge Masvidal.

Other connections, Cory Clark coaching at Izzy right now, has developed connections with Jon Jones. Woods has the same connection being an Izzy guy himself.

That said, it would be silly to say Iowa is leading the MMA charge - we're making good progress. Hoping there is a friendship with Cormier as well (i've seen pics of DC hanging with Izzy guys and Clark, but not sure how tight they are), head coach of the Gilroy Mustangs in CA - a HS full of legit big board talent.

If you don’t think the Mir connection has anything to do with the UFC partnership then I don’t know what to tell you. Bella wanted to go into fighting immediately and Dana White said she had to wrestle in college before he’d sign her.

Interesting. The fact that UFC sponsored Iowa is impressive. Didn't know they had done that.

In regards to Mir, I don't see that as a big deal. I'm into the women fighters but she will have to be a major phenom to move the needle for it to influence men and/or young men IMO. McKenzie Dern was pretty damn hyped (and attractive) coming in and we've seen how that has played out.

ATT being in Pleasant Gap (and right next to M2) is a big deal. The resources of ATT are vast and, again, their gyms are arguably the best in the world.
