Curious if anyone has heard or read about potential alternate uniforms at all? Those ones against Ohio State a few years ago I really liked.
Maybe that will help their defense play better.Haven’t heard but did you see Ohio State’s All Scarlet unis they’re wearing against Penn State?
A Color Rush of All-Scarlet Uniforms for Game Against Penn State
Fans are encouraged to scarlet-out Ohio Stadium on Oct. 30ohiostatebuckeyes.com
The only gray on the uniforms was the numbers/accent on shoulders. Unless I'm even more colorblind than I previously thought. Weren't they black with gray numbers outlined in "gold?"I'm sure it's just me, but I was over this "alternate" uni thing before it started. Show respect for good tradition. In that vein, look at the Yankees, despite how much most of us hate them, they understand good tradition. They are still the only team in MLB without their names on their jerseys, home or away. They wear traditional gray on the road and traditional pinstripes at home. Who needs an alternate uniform? You're the Yankees, dammit. Look like the Yankees.
The alt uni obsession is another unfortunate byproduct of so much money in college sports (and pro sports too). It wasn't THAT long ago that most teams couldn't even afford decent practice uniforms let alone two or three or four sets of 125 game unis.
I realize I'm spittin' into the wind. But, for example, I wish Iowa had destroyed Ohio State 55-24 while wearing their actual, nationally identifiable uniforms. The gray alts were not bad. They just didn't say IOWA.
Copying the Steelers uniforms since 1980 is not “good tradition.” The Steelers uniforms were chosen for the pathetic reason that they were good at the time and Iowa’s uniforms would therefore more recognizable nationally. Even Hayden ditched them in the 1990s. There is nothing sacrosanct about copycat uniforms we have only been wearing since the 80s.I'm sure it's just me, but I was over this "alternate" uni thing before it started. STFU, after 40 years, yes they are a tradition.Copying the Steelers uniforms since 1980 is not “good tradition.” The Steelers uniforms were chosen for the pathetic reason that they were good at the time and Iowa’s uniforms would therefore more recognizable nationally. Yankees ‘aggressively pursuing’ brand new alternate jersey with Nike
The New York Yankees have reportedly become enamored with Nike's shiny new toy City Connect jerseys, and are aggressively pursuing one.yanksgoyard.com
Better than the OSU?I’d like to see 2015 Minny uniforms come back. Those were executed perfectly.
I like the cy-hawk suggestion. I'd say both teams wear home uni's as well but that would require state to settle on a uniform for at least a season.I like the alternate. It is another way to infuse some energy into the product. I could show you 100 pictures of Josh Jackson but if I show you one of him in the black/Gray that draws an emotion.
Crazy Idea: Each year Iowa and Iowa state agree on a throwback year and play in replicas of that year. We could watch "1955" in 2028.
This. I think having alternate uniforms one game a year would excite and energize the kids. Unfortunately, we have a HC who thinks once a decade is plenty (and maybe too much). That said, the kids love the alt jerseys and I don't see anything wrong with having one or two games with alt uniforms, particularly if they rif on the strong Tigerhawk ID. I like some of the flat black or gloss varnish look used in other schools alts.

Yes. Gray has no business being in an Iowa uniform. The Minn 2015 were almost perfect, the numbers were just clownishly large and weirdly shaped. We basically need what Michigan wore a few weeks ago (all navy) except all black and yellow. Nice and simple, even simpler than our current jerseys.Better than the OSU?
I agree on once a year but we have had 5 in the past 9 years, including two in one season. So Kirk may not be as crotchety as some think. Although I'd prefer to do them well if that means only once every other year rather than trotting out something new for the sake of something new.This. Wearing an alternate uniform for one game out of 12+ is hardly ruining tradition, and gets the players/recruits even more amped up. I really like the Hawkeyes uniform versus the Yankees pinstripes comparison too since their national brand recognition is basically the sameI'm sure it's just me, but I was over this "alternate" uni thing before it started. I don't like alternate uniforms. It does not seem like the Hawkeyes are playing with a different uniform.Curious if anyone has heard or read about potential alternate uniforms at all? Those ones against Ohio State a few years ago I really liked.
Good idea. The white unis with yellow pants isn’t a great look.We just need to add both black and white pants that both match our overall look (like the black pants we wore in 2019 against Minnesota). This would allow us to go:
We would have 6 different options, without deviating from our overall look and brand.
- Black over Gold
- White over Gold
- Black over Black
- White over Black
- Black over White
- White over White
(FWIW, I loved both the tOSU blackout uniforms and the Bold Gold uniforms we wore in 2019 against Penn State, but neither were particularly on-brand.)
The helmets were basically grey or charcoal with a very interesting pattern meshed into them. Pretty cool though..The only gray on the uniforms was the numbers/accent on shoulders. Unless I'm even more colorblind than I previously thought. Weren't they black with gray numbers outlined in "gold?"
Why did the steelers choose our colors? U of I has been around a lot longer than the Steelers. They wear our colors, we wear their design.Copying the Steelers uniforms since 1980 is not “good tradition.” The Steelers uniforms were chosen for the pathetic reason that they were good at the time and Iowa’s uniforms would therefore more recognizable nationally. Switch out the numbers on the helmets with a black tigerhawk logo and widen the black stripes on the helmet and pants and I think these uniforms would be toughWe could always bring these back from the 50s........
Every Pittsburgh sports team is black and yellow, genius. Why did the steelers choose our colors? U of I has been around a lot longer than the Steelers. They wear our colors, we wear their design.
While I tend to agree with a lot of this, neither one of us is a 20-year-old kid in 2021. Every single time I hear about a team sporting an alternate uni, there are stories about the team being absolutely pumped. Nothing wrong with that. I suggest getting over yourself.I'm sure it's just me, but I was over this "alternate" uni thing before it started. Show respect for good tradition. Oh, JFC. Very few non-retirees even remember Iowa's pre-1979 unis. A majority of college-aged kids probably wouldn't be able to tell you who copied whom. Iowa has one of the most identifiable college helmet logos ever. How an Iowa fan can be hung-up on the "Steelers thing" and say that the Hawkeyes unis don't qualify as "good tradition" is befuddling.Copying the Steelers uniforms since 1980 is not “good tradition.” The Steelers uniforms were chosen for the pathetic reason that they were good at the time and Iowa’s uniforms would therefore more recognizable nationally.
