Either of the top two. Or just wear black pants with the black jersey and white pants with the white jersey a few games a year.
If Michigan copied Delaware, are the wings not a tradition? No, they're a copy.
That gets a hard "meh" from me. I guess I like their silver pants and red...sorry, scarlet, jerseys better. But at least they aren't hideously ugly.Haven’t heard but did you see Ohio State’s All Scarlet unis they’re wearing against Penn State?
A Color Rush of All-Scarlet Uniforms for Game Against Penn State
Fans are encouraged to scarlet-out Ohio Stadium on Oct. 30ohiostatebuckeyes.com
And none of the Pittsburgh sports team has been around as long as the U of I. So I am searching for how that applies. Can you clarify that?Every Pittsburgh sports team is black and yellow, genius.
We could always bring these back from the 50s........
If they don’t have wings on the shoulders, count me out ….Hawks need to fly baby!
If you’re suggesting that the Pirates stole their colors from Iowa, I’ll let you stand on that flag. Also, Iowa’s colors were black and old gold back in the day, not yellow. And none of the Pittsburgh sports team has been around as long as the U of I. So I am searching for how that applies. Black pants, black cleats, black socks, black jersey, black helmet. No stripes. Light gray “shadow” Tiger Hawk on helmet, light gray numbers.I could see us bringing back the black pants for the blackout game against Minn. I really like that look.
Anything with the wings on shoulders is OUT! Hideous. These
Or
These
Would be fine by me.
Shoot me but I love these too.
Yes. When we wore our usual black jerseys with black pants and the fat yellow stripe it looked awful.Black pants, black cleats, black socks, black jersey, black helmet. No stripes. Light gray “shadow” Tiger Hawk on helmet, light gray numbers.
How dare you.Anything with the wings on shoulders is OUT! Hideous.
I appreciate our traditional uni as much as anybody(except you maybe😉) but variety is the spice of life my man.I'm sure it's just me, but I was over this "alternate" uni thing before it started. Show respect for good tradition. In that vein, look at the Yankees, despite how much most of us hate them, they understand good tradition. They are still the only team in MLB without their names on their jerseys, home or away. They wear traditional gray on the road and traditional pinstripes at home. Who needs an alternate uniform? You're the Yankees, dammit. Look like the Yankees.
The alt uni obsession is another unfortunate byproduct of so much money in college sports (and pro sports too). It wasn't THAT long ago that most teams couldn't even afford decent practice uniforms let alone two or three or four sets of 125 game unis.
I realize I'm spittin' into the wind. But, for example, I wish Iowa had destroyed Ohio State 55-24 while wearing their actual, nationally identifiable uniforms. The gray alts were not bad. They just didn't say IOWA.
I wanted one of those jerseys so bad as a kid first really getting into college football.apparently that comment went over your heads...
Totally agree. Personally I was disappointed one of our biggest wins (OSU in 2017) we weren’t wearing our uniforms because it didn’t LOOK like Iowa on the field so it was a missed opportunity for brand building.I'm sure it's just me, but I was over this "alternate" uni thing before it started. Except Michigan didn't copy Delaware. Crisler designed that style at Princeton, brought it to Michigan in the late 30s and it's been there since. That's actually tradition. If Michigan copied Delaware, are the wings not a tradition?
I’m guessing most traditions are copied, but once the act is practiced for an extended period of time, it is a tradition. ND probably wasn’t the first team to have gold helmets. Is it Army, or ND with the traditional gold helmet? One is a tradition, and the other was copied?…
They both have traditional helmets. I think it’s been long enough.
Iowa’s had the same uniform longer than 80% of the rest of the nation. I’d say it’s tradition. That, and on top of the uniform, they have one of the greatest helmets in all of football.
Any uniform that results in our players doing things like this is fine by me.
You proved my point.Except Michigan didn't copy Delaware. Crisler designed that style at Princeton, brought it to Michigan in the late 30s and it's been there since. That's actually tradition.

So Michigan had PJ Fleck before there was a PJ Fleck? Just exchange oars for wings.Except Michigan didn't copy Delaware. Crisler designed that style at Princeton, brought it to Michigan in the late 30s and it's been there since. That's actually tradition.
The person who designed that brought it to Michigan (and didn't copy Princeton). Your point only stands if the person who designed the Steelers unis came to Iowa to coach the Hawks...but he didnt, so just acknowledge you were incorrect and drop it.You proved my point.
You are talking about originality, not tradition. Michigan had been doing it since the 30s, but they weren’t the originals.
Yes, that is actually tradition. They have been doing it consistently for a very long time, that is a tradition. Kind of like Iowa’s uniforms…
So PJ Fleck and his oars are more traditional than the Iowa uniform? The person who designed that brought it to Michigan (and didn't copy Princeton). Your point only stands if the person who designed the Steelers unis came to Iowa to coach the Hawks...but he didnt, so just acknowledge you were incorrect and drop it.

We are one of the programs lucky enough to have some tradition so we should embrace it. Only 2 coaches since the late 70s and other than maybe 4 years we’ve had the same uniform all of those years (and it helps that we’ve had winning teams nearly all of those years).
Changing uniforms all the time is for teams searching and trying to find an identity. You don’t see Penn State and Alabama rolling out alternative uniforms all the time, and for good reason. When people see their uniforms it means something because their brand is recognizable. Obviously we aren’t quite at that level but you get the idea, that’s what we should be aspiring towards.
The one exception to all of this is throwback uniforms to some of our good teams from the past like the 1958 uniforms several people have posted. One of the few things ISU has done that I’ve really liked is those Jack Trice throwbacks and the stripe logo they’ve been using. I really like the idea of tying the present to the past and honoring the past. Obviously Iowa has been trying to honor Duke Slater lately but it doesn’t look like our uniform from that time were very distinctive.
1. There are very few "originals" of anything. No, they're a copy.
Keeping them = tradition and ours are now among the best looking, and most recognizable in college football. That's a very good thing.Copying the Steelers uniforms since 1980 is not “good tradition.” The Steelers uniforms were chosen for the pathetic reason that they were good at the time and Iowa’s uniforms would therefore more recognizable nationally. Even Hayden ditched them in the 1990s. There is nothing sacrosanct about copycat uniforms we have only been wearing since the 80s.
Only 1980 is now 41 years ago. 2 coaches. That's a damn long time in the sporting world. What's the official time limit for something to become a tradition?Copying the Steelers uniforms since 1980 is not “good tradition.” The Steelers uniforms were chosen for the pathetic reason that they were good at the time and Iowa’s uniforms would therefore more recognizable nationally. I didn’t say it wasn’t a tradition. I said it wasn’t “good tradition” (other poster’s term).Only 1980 is now 41 years ago. 2 coaches. That's a damn long time in the sporting world. What's the official time limit for something to become a tradition?
