Andrew Francis

I echo the sentiments of many that have posted before me. Please Coach Fran, hire a defensive mother frickin rebounding defensive assistant. Turn over (anyone) more than half of practice time to your new hire.

May the new Hawkeye Coach be experienced and seasoned and yet not 44 or so. Hopefully with some Chicago ties, loves to recruit and brothers are especially welcome. No young, or former Hawkeyes need apply... unless they are the best fit. Iowa deserves nothing less.

My priority is a recruiter. Our staff has been inept recruiting high quality out of state.

We've had Cook and Garza over a 5 year period.

We've relied on Jok, Uthoff, Bohannon, Baer, Woodbury, Wieskamp and Gessell.

The defense issue is predominantly personnel. Phil Jackson couldn't make Garza improve his cement shoes or get Bohannon athletic enough to stay in front of Cassius Winston.

Bring in a coach that can recruit athletes out of state.

Do people really think hiring a different coach is going to impact defense? There is what 100+ years of coaching experience on Iowa's bench and they collectively haven't been able to do it. It starts with recruiting. You can't have the guards Fran has had and play good D. Need a recruiter who can convince Fran guards, quickness and athleticism matters. Coaching gets much easier when you have the athletes.

HawkCentral is such an overhype homer. In their mailbag article they said Francis will be missed because of his fertile recruiting grounds on the East Coast and Minnesota??? I can't think of the last time Iowa had a player from Minnesota on the roster. Can anyone?

Presume they'd be referring to the coming years as Minnesota has some of the nations top players and there is an abundance of them over the next 4 classes.

It was before Fran. I believe it was Anthony Tucker.

This. We’ve had good defensive teams under Fran. It’s primarily a Jimmy and Joe issue.

You realize that we often take instate kids OVER out of state kids, right? Just because we have a lot of iowa kids doesn’t mean we can’t recruit out of state.

Please demonstrate where you believe we've passed on an out of state 4* because we got an in state recruit.

I'm not talking about three star 300th ranked Brandon Hutton types, I'm talking about top 150.

If we're passing on those guys then Fran isn't doing this right.

Maybe the year we only had one scholarship and took Jok, but my memory isn't good enough to remember alternatives at the time.

Ben McCollum - NW Missouri State

241–75 (.763) with 2 national titles, 2 D2 COY awards, and 5 time conference COY honors over the past 10 years as head coach. 38-0 this year. He is a 38 year old Storm Lake native who was a hell of a player back in the day. Tireless recruiter. We need to snag him before someone else does.

I like Jeff as a player but this is an example of why he's not high on my list. Seems insecure to chase after anonymous Twitter criticism.

In a 7th grade tournament, Jeff Horner won the tip, took a quick pass, and threw it down hard over someone within the first 6 seconds of the game. Dunked on us 3 or 4 more times and was pulling up a few steps past half court and burying them all game. Doesn't really relate to anything being said here, but I had a flashback after seeing his name again and decided to CSB.

Hmmm Ellingson vs. Oglesby? If Fran can't find MVC players in state he has proven he will go out of state to get them. Dailey to Akron and whatever conference they play in as another stellar example of Fran missing by oh I don't know about two levels of where a kid should play vs. B1G.

Solid suggestion. My concern would be his recruiting ties (or lack thereof) to major recruiting cities. A lot of his guys in D2 are from smaller areas (besides KC).

But otherwise yes he is a hell of a coach.

You wanted Fran to pass on a Rivals150 instate kid with multiple big ten offers at a position of need?

Brady was a bit of a reach but we were not depending on him for anything and we were trying to land his Top 100 AAU teammate LaChance.

Dailey was a late signee who also had multiple big ten offers. We didn’t choose him over anyone. We took a chance with an open ride.

Any relation to Eric?

;)

How is going to Cal Berkeley an advancement in AF's career? Interesting...

I suppose if they somehow completely turn things around from Lickliter bad, to a good team, then he would have a proven resume with Sienna, Iowa and Cal.

Just pure speculation on my point here. But I was thinking same thing and thought maybe on the Cal staff he's maybe the #2 coach and top assistant there like Speraw is here at Iowa.

I suppose that could be it. And if they succeed to bring Cal back from the pits of the P12, that would he another feather in his cap. Plus the experience of working with another HC. That never hurts a person's prospective on any subject.

LOL!

I will never understand the obsession some Iowa fans have about hiring former Iowa players, regardless of whether or not they have any coaching experience or are the right fit for the job.
I‘d love to see Bob Sanders get a serious look for this position.

Side note, since we're off base at this point.

Regarding the Kakert article on Francis leaving - has anyone noticed that every single Kakert piece has at least one typo of some sort? When did it become acceptable to not proofread work in any manner before putting your name behind it?

"Melshan Basabe" -- really?

Jack Nunge
Gabe Olaseni
Luka Garza
Tyler Cook
Isiah Moss
Anthony Clemmons
Bryce Cartwright

I think these guys were/are pretty darn good players and all out of state. I know we've had plenty of swings and misses but every staff does.

So basically 1 average player every year, with a good player thrown in every 3 years

That's ok, the UofI misspelled his name his freshman year on the intro on the board at Carver. I emailed them and they fixed it.

Cal is a dead end stop. This is a head scratcher for sure. The PAC is struggling right now and Cal is by far the worst program health wise. It’s not even an issue of the losing.. the Athletic Department at Cal is currently in dire straits and the dysfunction is from top to bottom.

Curious, does anyone know AF’s new salary at Cal. Was told it is around 160k. No idea if that is true. What was he making here? I thought our Assistant coaches were making North of 250k. Not sure if that is true, but I’ve seen that number discussed on here. Can someone verify either?
