Honest question here (and maybe just ignorance on my part) ... but why would a kid who has an offer from the Hawks choose to go wrestle at Purdue? Is it money? Is it mat time? I'm guessing for every kid it's different ... I love wrestling. But I don't follow the inner workings of scholarship money and how its used, etc. I just always scratch my head and wonder when I see a kid pick a Michigan or a Purdue or a Northwestern versus an offer from Iowa?bummer. Best of luck to him. I find this interesting. I thought Falbo looked small for 182 so he must want to go 174 in college. Purdue will probably have Lyon 84 and Kobe Woods 97.
bummer. Best of luck to him.
i would say mat time. If 74 is on his radar Young wouldn't allow that til he was a SR. 84 he would have to sit behind Wilcke til he was a JR. Where at Purdue 74 is wide open for him to be a 4 year starter and 84 he just has to beat out Lyon which he could probably do.Honest question here (and maybe just ignorance on my part) ... but why would a kid who has an offer from the Hawks choose to go wrestle at Purdue? Thanks for the insight. As I mentioned, I'm guessing various factors play into each kid's decision ... I just never understood a kid picking a Purdue/NW/Mich over one of the most/the most storied wrestling programs in history ...i would say mat time. $ wise you have to think Iowa is saving it for Berge and Warner if they committ. Purdue was probably offering more.
Location could be another. Purdue isn't much closer to CT then Iowa, but it's still closer.
He may just feel more confortable with the coaches and wrestlers at Purdue.
If only we had a slush fund and an ROTC program to send him to, it would be a non-issue.But couldn't he take less for the good of the team? I mean that's how t works now at major programs.
Best of luck to falbo. Probably made the best financial choice got him. Student loans suck
Plus now there having seniors and high school move to there state a year early and finish high school online so they can establish residency so that when they do take less for the good of the team it won't be so bad finacial wise as out of state. Murphy and Stickley did/our doing this, but they did it after they graduated HS. Figure you have to be at least 18 to do this.If only we had a slush fund and an ROTC program to send him to, it would be a non-issue.![]()

I need to do some "wrestling 101" research on how the money part works ... Anywho, thanks again for the response.
Bummer, but kids have to make the best decision for themselves, based on their own criteria. Maybe he fell in love with the Purdue campus? Maybe he just automatically clicked w/ Ersland? Any number of reasons. I like his upside a ton, would have loved him at Iowa. I do not think he would have been sitting behind Cashe Wilcke if he came here, although I don't know what other prospects would have been around him that may have beaten him out.
My $ would be on Cash. I think he's better then most people think. Beat Hunter Ritter last year who was a top 20 recruit and took 8th a university nationals this year. I still think he is better suited at 84 but understand for the better of the team and himself will be wrestling 97 this year. Not sure about that. Wilke would have two years on him and isn't a significantly lower ranked wrestler than Falbo out of HS I don't believe. That's assuming they would be at the same weight.
Are you talking about Nick Lee and PSU. If so, can you tell me where you got your information from in regards to Lee being able to apply for instate tuition? Everything I've heard contradicts what you are implying here.Plus now there having seniors and high school move to there state a year early and finish high school online so they can establish residency so that when they do take less for the good of the team it won't be so bad finacial wise as out of state. I believe that is correct in Pennsylvania but his residency would have to have been established for reasons other than educational purposes. Now I would think it would be difficult to prove he moved here for any other reason than he will be attending PSU. I guess it could be argued he moved here strictly for the purpose to wrestle but since he had already committed to PSU and will be wrestling at PSU, I doubt that would fly. I'm gonna guess he won't be getting instate tuition rates but I could very well be wrong.http://www.finaid.org/otheraid/stateresidency.phtml
In most states I thought you can establish residency in one year prior to first day of class. Not sure if Nick Lee is doing this, but he probably could under independent resident.
Oh, I bet they can figure out away to make it happen.I believe that is correct in Pennsylvania but his residency would have to have been established for reasons other than educational purposes. I'm a PSU fan but I'd be displeased if this is allowed. It totally demeans the spirit of in state tuition and who should benefit.Oh, I bet they can figure out away to make it happen.
No clue if this is what Lee/PSU is trying to do, and he and his situation isn't whom I was referring too in my original post.
I think you will start to see more of this over the years. In the last 20 years parents have been having kids start school later. Be it for sports or parents just want to hold on the here kid for another year. You are seeing more 18 year old seniors who happen to turn 18 before there senior year of HS. Now kids can finish HS school online or get GED's. So at 18 a high school senior could go to a new state get a job, register to vote, and get residency before they apply or enroll into a university. I have no clue if Lee is 18, but if he is I would figure this is the plan.
Allows the coach to go after out of state kids and offer less ship $ for the good of the team, but helps the recruit with less school dept by becoming a resident before they enroll. If this is what Cael is doing he is ahead of the times and very smart. What Manville is doing(Army) is another way to save $ off the 9.9 and very smart. You will see this more in sports like wrestling because it is very rare that a kid gets a full ride unlike basketball and football.
It's rare but it happens, as years go by you could see it more. A lot of factors have to come into play just to pursue it.I'm a PSU fan but I'd be displeased if this is allowed. It totally demeans the spirit of in state tuition and who should benefit.
