Strictly interpreted, the rules wouldn't allow Mends a medical hardship, but he can apply for an exception. And I think we're at a point where the NCAA would pretty much have to give it to him if he wanted it. If you're gonna give Kyle Kempt a 6th year just because he wasn't good enough to start the first 4 years of his career, I don't see how they can deny one to a guy who gets hurt before he's even registered for fall classes.

Giving Mends another year would be the right thing to do, no question. But this is the NCAA we're talking about. Ask Drew Ott.
 
I hope he applies and is awarded one. (If he wants?) hate to see a kid work hard for so long ad not realize the fruits of his efforts.
 
A hardship seems reasonable in this circumstance, but I believe there may be strict rules that govern it.

With the Mends injury, I count only 5 Seniors slated to start (3 on offense and 2 on defense). The best players on this team are Sophomores and Juniors, and their ability to be lead might be crucial to the success of this team.
