Anybody listening the JBo interview after the game? He defended Fran from the refs

I posted this in another thread too. I really like JBo and will miss him terribly...

I just viewed the JBo press conference (or at least some of it until BTN cut it off) and JBo definitely made a great statement about the double standard between Fran and other coaches - especially Howard today.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again - JBo is the most thoughtful, selfless (think Street FT record), and unique personality I’ve had the pleasure of watching as a long time Hawk fan.

He mentioned how Fran gets a bad rap from the refs, that it is undeserved and it how Fran is perceived nationally as an out of control hothead. He made a mention of how other coaches in the league get away with a lot more, he mentioned Juwan Howard.

I laughed because I thought he was taking a shot at Gard for defending Davison with very similar verbage after last week's win.

I think Fran does have a short leash with referees. That said, Fran went over the line with his Rant after the Ohio State loss when he got suspended.

Yeah, not sure how I feel about him throwing that out of nowhere. But at the same time, he’s about done and gives zero f&$ks I’m sure by now so go nuts.

Fran also tracked down and berated an official in a tunnel not too long ago so...

No doubt Fran went over the line after that game and deserved to get suspended. Just like Gard went over the line when Davison was acting like a douche with two hook and holds at the end of the Iowa-Wisconsin game and Howard acting like a complete moron yesterday.

It is a bit of a double standard when Izzo can just go after the refs in his halftime interview, nothing.

I certainly saw the connection to Gard’s “Davison is a good kid” an”Fran is a great man” but thought more than it was about referees not treating Fran right but Iowa fans not giving Fran the respect he deserve.

He’s not wrong and I’m loving the not giving a f*** attitude on the way out the door.

But let’s not forget Fran has crossed the line a few times. But JBo’s right that others seem to get a pass from the media and the conference.

Howard should absolutely be suspended.
Has Fran ever gone after another coach? He’s had instances where he ditches the handshake line because of the other coach. But he’s never had to be restrained from going after the other bench.

He has had two big issues in my opinion. Chasing after a ref and calling him a cheater, which is something we all wanted to do after that game, is something a coach shouldn’t be doing in public. And the contact with the ref, that was initiated by the ref raising his arms directly in front of where Fran was walking, was made a big deal about by the media. Those two instances will haunt Fran for the rest of his career. Everything else is likely excusable, including the chair incident.

There is nothing wrong with a blowup if done sparingly. Ferentz does that in football, he goes off once every few years and you know it is the real deal when you see him going crazy. Other coaches in the conference are allowed to blow up or whine or complain with little negative media coverage. Fran does need to consider when his team needs his coaching instead of needing him to go after the refs. If he can find the right ratio of that I think he’d be fine moving forward.

Regarding Fran, his players love him. I don't know why he gets a raw deal from the officials. He does seem to say nothing to the refs for most of the game, but when he does say something he is demonstrative. Other coaches are in the refs ears all the time, so maybe they have built up tolerance for them. I don't know why, but I agree he seems to be getting treated differently by Warren and the officials.

With that said, I don't want Barta to go all Pollard and call a press conference about a conference conspiracy against Fran.

I think Fran's earned that reputation. He always seems very disrespectful to officials. When his team plays no D it's always the officials fault. There's an art to working officials and Fran clearly doesn't know how to do it. Izzo has a PHD in it. Gard hasn't nearly got the calls that Bo Ryan got at Wisky and I don't think he ever will. Some coaches are really good at working officials and some aren't. You have to wonder if Howard will eventually be treated like Fran if he keeps acting like he is.
