Youtube's algorithm put this in my suggested videos yesterday. This guy is knocking on doors, selling solar, about a mile from my house. I've dialed the phone cold thousands of times, not recently, but never knocked on any doors. I respect anyone who even attempts to do this.

The top three types of salesmen that I have had knocking on my door are 1) solar, 2) lawn/tree services and 3) religious groups.

Only once have I ever taken them up on their sales pitch. It was a guy who was trimming my neighbors trees and he asked if I wanted him to cut down and haul away a dead queen palm for $40. I said:

Just when I had a paper route when I was 12-14.....sucked. Sucked trying to get folks to pay up on the route as well...

The wave of home invasion robberies in Miami in the early 90s taught me to never open my front door. I have had tree guys and cable company people leave their cards on my porch.

Financial planning. Door knocked daily for about 2-3 years. Then a couple times a week for the next 1-2 years. It’s very hard work, but incredibly effective.
Brilliant. Why put the effort into research on who would be best to trust with all your money when you can just give it to some random dude who knocks on your door? Americans value laziness and convenience above all else.

When I was in college I sold "Planet earth" water door to door. It was a small RO company in Lincoln. Think culligan water tanks. It wasn't terrible, I was in crazy good shape with soccer so the miles of walking were whatever. I've done more shitty stuff to make a buck. ( worked at a chicken factory one time, that was super shitty, was a labor guy for a retaining wall company, that was worse)

Looks like they went under at some point.

A local guy did this for his financial planning business. I have several people and didn't really have any business for him, but I tried to encourage him and communicate my respect for what he was doing. Takes a LOT of guts to go door to door like that.

I've not seen him out and about the past couple of years so maybe it didn't work out for him. He was young, and our neighborhood likely has people who have long since figured out their financial planning situation, so might have been a mismatch, but man I respected his effort.

Did door 2 door for about 7 years. Really enjoyed it. If you have the right personality/attitude you rarely run into assholes.

On the phone, I was taught that if you sound like you belong, at the level you are calling, you don't get mistreated. Early on, when it was terrifying and I got through to an owner or CEO, not a single one of them was ever rude to me. I think that was because all of them had been in my shoes at some point. Their secretaries were a different story. They were nasty until I learned to sound like someone that was a peer of their boss.

I don't go on FB or Nextdoor much but I remember regularly seeing posts from people complaining about an alarm salesman knocking on their door right around sundown or after dark. I would think people being rude would be more common, though that's probably based on my reading those posts.

Totally. It was incredible. I never had to earn trust and most people just cut me a check and handed over their life savings as soon as they found out what I did. It was amazing.

I had a paper route in 7th and 8th grade. I did knock on a few doors but never sold anything. I knocked on a lot more doors to get people to pay. Most of the time the people paid but I can remember a few who didn't.

It either didn’t work out or he is very successful today. My guess, if he was out regularly and doing the hard work, he is probably quite successful. There just comes a point in time where you no longer have to knock on doors.

I had a few on my route that never seemed to have cash on hand...

We had these stubs we'd give folks when they payed....had a few that always seemed to have a few months worth. Same customers that would bitch and moan the paper wasn't folded correctly....same customers that seemed to let their dogs roam about...

SOTE.

It was 40 years ago but I do remember having rather lengthy conversations with a few people who hadn't paid. I can't remember any of what was said. It was during a pretty bad recession so I'm guessing they felt bad about not being able to pay their paper bill.

You've hit the bottom of the barrel in career choices when you find yourself knocking on stranger's doors. More prestigious careers would be garbage man and/or toilet cleaner. Doesn't mean I don't respect you for doing what you have to do, but I don't want you on my doorstep...... and pretty much nobody else does either. If you find yourself knocking doors, consider getting some training for an actual career that provides some value.

There was a shooting in my neighborhood a while back, and the VERY NEXT DAY a D2D security/servailance salesman knocked on my door and SHOWED me the shooting from another customers doorbell cam. Like WTF???? I didn't want to see that shit. Why did he think that was a good sales pitch?

Another video from the same channel. This guy flew here for a wedding a few days early and knocked on some doors to pay for his trip. This video is good. It shows people mostly saying no and giving him objections.

THE TRUTH ABOUT SELLING SOLAR IN NEW MARKETS - TAMPA 2023

I would have never thought you could sell financial planning door to door. There is a guy in town who has a very successful business building and restoring historic wood windows. He started his business knocking on doors when he moved to town offering to fix general carpentry issues that were visible from the outside. At some point someone asked him if he could fix one of their windows and a business was born.

We rarely get solicitors knocking these days. Solar and roofing companies seem to be the only ones still doing it. Occasionally lawn, real estate or pest control will leave door tags.

Yeah, to be fair, there was no selling. that would be highly frowned upon. It was more or less just introducing myself and my business. Hand out some business cards and maybe get a few numbers here and there. It was a long process.

Had a solar guy come to the house a few months ago. The (no pic) wife always makes me answer the door. Guy claims his company has some preferred vendor deal with the local electrical provider and I can get discount. I said, great can you have them send me some info. He goes on with his sales pitch. I repeat my ask. He ignores again. I ask one more time. Then all of a sudden, wife appears, says “you’ve said no three times,” and closes the door in the guy’s face. Gawd, I love that woman…

I hate when they keep going on and on after asking for info. Especially when they start with the "if you purchase today we install for free." Bro, I'm not making that sort of commitment without seeing some info first.

Yes, if you want to guarantee that the “dialogue” will continue on in a non-productive direction, just ask for info.

Almost forgot to mention. Man, when you are walking around neighborhoods and knocking on peoples doors, you see some ****ed up shit. You would be surprised at how disgusting and filthy some people are. Some really strange folks out there. I definitely interrupted a handful of orgies. Must have thought I was this guy.

Had one lady open the door with just a robe on that was wide open for all to see. She said I wasn't who she thought I was, but invited me in anyway. She was pretty hot, but I declined.

Pic or GTFO.
