Anyone think Dean Oliver would make a good head coach some day?

Depends if the refs give him the call every time his team charges wildly into the lane and throws something up barely looking

I would love to take a shot on someone like him. Lots of former Hawks out there that could be great….Oliver, Horner, R Bowen. They really are not even considered young anymore. All great coaches got their shot to be a head coach when they were young. Are Iowa fans afraid to be great? I would not blink and eye if Fran left tomorrow. He produced some pretty good teams here and I am appreciative of the work he has done, but time to turn the page after 13 years. Take a chance on being great. Basketball is not a numbers game…..teams can get really good….fast.

People may goff at mention of him being the head coach, but I would love it if Iowa took a chance like that. He probably is not far off from the age of guys like coach K when they 1st were hired as a head coach. He has been around a lot of good coaching minds in his career….Woodley in HS, Alford and Lickliter in college, his pro coaches in Europe, and then Devries and Fran while coaching. You gain knowledge being around different coaches(even Lick) and can take all that to form your own coaching philosophy. I have little doubt he has the knowledge to do the job.

Very difficult to assess how good a coach Dean is or Gatens or even Horner. So much of coaching is being able to sell yourself, your image, recruit, get a guy like Barta to bankroll you a lot of money.

I really like Devries, but next year will be his true test when he loses all of his experienced players at Drake.
I would love to see Devries as the head hawk….but Oliver, Horner, Bowen are all interesting too.

I like Gatens, but I think his association with Fran probably has me a bit hesitant. It’s not like we’re shooting great and the coaches are saying, “yeah Matt has really focused in on that area for us”

You mean all the players he brought in when he took the job. He has more than gotten the job done at Drake….which is a very difficult place to win. He already passed any test.

I do not disagree, but he will have to do it again next year, just saying

Whoever the next coach is (and this goes for football too), there should be one ironclad requirement built into the job offer:

"Incumbent shall have no sons under the age of 25 and/or with any remaining intercollegiate athletic eligibility at the time of hire. Furthermore, incumbent promises not to sire any male offspring during coaching tenure."

The OP said nothing about him as Iowa's head coach.

The Iowa Mahomie responds:

Correct. I was just curious what his coaching aspirations are and wonder what type of head coach he would make.

So, 83Hawk says that the OP said nothing about him as Iowa's head coach to which the OP responds that is Correct, I was only wondering what type of head coach he would make and if he would be interested. There are some really stupid people on this site. So, the OP did say something about him being Iowa's head coach even if he is too stupid to recognize it.
