Are bball punishments usually pretty weak?

In football, you accidentally hit someone the wrong way and you can miss 8% of your season because of a true accident.

In bball you can intentionally stomp on a guy and miss like 6% of the year?
That seems really odd, especially in the "protect the kids" era.
