Are the Hawks better this year than last?

It's being reported via Twitter that Izzo said "this is the toughest IA team we've faced."

Take it for what it's worth as Izzo, like many coaches, are overly complimentary of opponents sometimes...

Too early to ask as there's a lot of season left to play with a lot of tough games.

Currently, we appear to be not as reliant on certain players, as in years past. Everyone seems to be able to pick up the pieces when the wheels come off.

We've been running well and shooting the 3 well. We beat a perpetually good defensive team with our running game. Decision making has been pretty good, also. This can drive me nuts, but they've been able to snap out of it quickly.

Bench play has to continue it's contributions. Get better, even. I'd like to see Ellingson find his mojo again and Wagner continue to get meaningful minutes. He earned them tonight.

Jok can really drive this team to good things. Utey is important, almost taken for granted that he'll get his. When Jok is on his game, another level happens.

Shooting well covers up a lot of weaknesses. Overall I think we have more weaknesses this year, especially rebounding. But our shooting has been terrific and minimized the effect of those weaknesses.

Definitely this. We hold up pretty well in a fire fight. It might make things tougher on the road but I think we'll have more of a pitchers chance against the more elite teams. Last year they mostly throttled us and we had no way to get back in a game

Agree. It is too early to determine whether our shooting can continue to compensate for our weakness on the boards. Purdue is going to be a tough one. We need Uthoff to bounce back with a great game.

This team's ability to score makes other teams play defense. MI State looked gassed at the end. I was surprised at how hard Pete, Ellingson, Uthoff, Gesell, and Clemmons were running off screens. If Iowa had Jones tonight this game would have been a bigger rout. McC has built a nice scoring machine.

Still think the 13-14 team before the collapse, was our best team. Still, I do think this team is better than last years because of the balance of the starters, and better bench play.

If we can play Purdue tough I think we will be for real. Our inside D and rebounding scare me with bulky, physical big and the Boilers have a bunch. We may be in for a long night of being backed down for easy looks. If we can make it difficult to feed the post we may have a chance.

I still think we are a 10-8 bubble team, but this victory will help as long as MS can hold serve until DV gets back

Obviously. No question what so ever.

We were losing to UNI scoring like 40 points in a game around this time last year.

It makes me laugh that people seriously thought Iowa wasn't going to be better than last year with this many seniors.

Its how college basketball works.

Really looking forward to that one. Purdue is huge, slow, and doesn't shoot well. But they're huge.

Could be a really high scoring game. They will dominate the boards and in the lane, Iowa will get allot of open shots and fast break points.

Will be really interesting matchup, especially when Iowa goes with Uhl at the 5.

Very good analysis. Ty
Basketball iq is not my forte so I appreciate the insight. I was raised in Iowa so I wrestled but I love Hawk bb

I really appreciate the insight from all of you. I really was worried about this year but players have came out of nowhere to fill the gaps. I'm impressed so far.

That team was abysmal in the half court and would go ridiculous stretches of time without scoring.

They didn't collapse, opponents adjusted and took away the transition offense and that was game over.

This team is better.

Good stuff Roll....I've only seen PU a few times this year so far and not a whole game. They are huge but how good of a shooting team are they? And like you said, being bigger are they quick enough to defend our shooters off screens and such? After scoring 83 tonight on a very tough, quick and athletic #1 MSU....pretty big too...we may be more able or have a better chance then I thought to sneak out a win in Mackey.....not expecting it but I've always thought this team is better than what a lot of people think and tonight's win only supports that thought.

I watched thu PU Wisky game tonight. They really shut down the lane with their size but Wisky is a good matchup for them. Hayes and Happ want to operate in the lane which is PUs strength. On offense Purdue was surprisingly sloppy with their passing.

Worst Wisconsin team Ive seen in a long time though, not much shooting or athleticism.

Purdue doesn't seem to ever play the two 7fts together and for some reason Hass starts but Hammonds looked way better tonight. Probably going to be a lottery pick if he plays like that consistently.

I honestly have no idea how this game will go. My guess is Iowa is going to get Purdue out of their comfort zone with our bigs that play on the perimeter and if they play zone we have three knock down shooters over 6'6.

On D im guessing Iowa will sag and double down allot and take their chances with Purdue shooting from the outside which they don't do well.

Better balance in scoring can cover up for a lot of things. The goal in this game is to score points after all.
