A Council Bluffs man has been charged with attempted murder and harassment following his arrest Monday night.

Police said Joey Stalbosky, 41, allegedly threatened to kill his girlfriend’s child — whom he referred to using a racial slur — and threw knives at the woman before chasing her down the street with his dead dog in hand.

Stalbosky is also charged with public intoxication and disobedience to police. On Tuesday he was ordered held on $100,000 bond.

Council Bluffs Police were dispatched to a domestic disturbance near 37th Street and Avenue D at 6:29 p.m.

The calling party said Stalbosky was trying to attack the woman and had thrown a knife at her, the report reads.

Police arrived and detained Stalbosky before speaking with the woman.

Investigators learned Stalbosky had reportedly been “displaying erratic behavior recently” and that he “exploded” tonight.”

The woman and her 5-year-old son were at home when Stalbosky “went crazy” after the man’s sick dog died.

Stalbosky reportedly blamed the woman and child for the dog’s death. The child “didn’t understand the concept of a dead animal,” as he was 5-years-old, and was bouncing around the house, according to the officer’s report.

The report noted, “Stalbosky stated he was going to kill,” the boy, and referred to him using the
The woman took her son to a relative’s house because she was scared, police said.

When she returned to the house, Stalbosky became angry again and began throwing things in the kitchen, then threatened to kill her, the report states.

“When he threatened to kill her, he grabbed a butcher knife from the kitchen and came after her,” police said. “She ran out the front door, and he threw the knife at her.” The knife landed in the yard.

The woman returned to the house to get her car keys and vehicle when she was confronted by Stalbosky again. He threw another knife — a steak knife this time — at her head and missed by inches, police said.

The woman tried to call 911 on her cell phone but Stalbosky grabbed it from her hand. She was eventually able to get her phone back and ran away again.

“Stalbosky chased after her with his dead dog in hand,” police said, just before officers arrived on scene.

Police found a steak knife by the front door. The butcher knife was not found, and the woman said Stalbosky may have picked it up earlier.

According to the police report, Stalbosky, in an interview with police, said he threw a knife at the wall, that he took the woman’s phone from her because she was calling police and that he used a slur in speaking of her son, the report reads.

Stalbosky’s next hearing is Nov. 21. Attempted murder carries a punishment of 25 years in prison if convicted.
