OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Omaha Police said two people were hurt Wednesday morning after officers fired multiple shots to defend themselves from a dog attack.

A “help and officer” call came in at 11:18 a.m. According to OPD Lt. Neal Bonacci, officers responding to a call about an evicted person tresspassing in the area were attacked by “a large aggressive dog” and fired shots to defend themselves. A police report issued Wednesday afternoon clarified that two dogs were involved in the incident.

Bonacci said two females — bystanders — were injured. The two victims — a 15-year-old girl and a 37-year-old woman — were taken to the Nebraska Medical Center with wounds to their legs that were not considered to be life-threatening.

“Investigators have not yet determined if the injuries were from the projectiles or from debris,” the OPD report issued Wednesday afternoon states.

He said two officers responded to the scene, and were wearing body cameras. Feeling the need to protect themselves, the officers fired at the dogs. At least one officer fired multiple shots, possibly 3-5 rounds.

“Officers went to the second floor and encountered two aggressive dogs fighting in a hallway while bystanders were attempting to separate the dogs. An officer had the bystanders move out of the way and then shot at the dogs, fatally wounding one of them,” the report states.

The breed of dog hasn’t been confirmed, but Bonacci said one of the dogs appeared to a Rottweiler. Police aren’t yet sure who owns the animals, one of which was killed in the shooting.

Traffic was seen moving through the street again at about 1 p.m.

Police are still investigating this incident.

“Additional information will be released as it becomes available,” the release states.

That doesn't read like "trying to defend themselves".
