Aurora police at it again

I thought they stopped the car because someone inside was suspected of stealing a motorcycle. Nope.

Montana is ten hours away.

Police then determined they had stopped the wrong car. It had Colorado license plates but a motorcycle with the same license plate number from Montana was the vehicle that had been reported as stolen on Sunday.

We all know the vast majority of cops are good... but damn, when you know the spotlight is on you.........

I feel like if the “vast majority“ were good, these nitwits’ coworkers would’ve raised a stink and gotten them fired long before this snafu. We all know who the idiots are at our jobs. Law enforcement probably isn’t any different.

LE is no different and there's a lot of idiot cops. However, it's hard to fire someone just for being an idiot.

This is why there is a nationwide movement to defund the police. A large segment of the population sees law enforcement as a direct threat to their lives, rather than an agency to protect and serve.
It probably seems that way because of what the media likes to push. You don't see them writing articles about the majority of law enforcement that are doing good and making a difference every day. You don't see them talking about the support we are getting locally from residents, so be aware just because that is what you're currently hearing about doesn't mean there's not a lot of support.

It's crap like this that convinces me that we need to get rid of qualified immunity. Their screw ups shouldn't become a burden to taxpayers. Cops should be required to carry the equivalent of malpractice insurance. Eventually, the bad cops won't be able to afford the premiums and they'll be washed out.

You don't think that people of color perceive law enforcement as a threat?

The vehicle stop was warranted despite the mistake. Cuffing minors is reasonable in some cases and not in others.

Jezz that's bad........and I thought all states were like Florida, a smaller font first number located on the left and then 5 or fewer digits located on the right.

To be fair whoever was tweeting seems to claim they were held at "gunpoint". But I don't see any guns drawn.

Don't they have information in their database which indicates both state and the type of vehicle stolen. Before they pull an entire family out of a mini-van and order them on the ground.

2 of my kids have autism if the cops did this to us it would not go very well and I'm afraid of what might happen. My 7 year old and my 4 year old simply would not stay on the ground. My 5 year old might. But since we are white it's unlikely I'd be terrified if we were black.

And that is not to mention all the shit that we would have to deal with afterwards. They would probably be sleeping in our room for months.

I’m guessing all occupants were extracted and the vehicle cleared by that point. Or maybe they were cuffing officers and not part of the extraction team. But I didn’t watch the video.

Yes, there’s a stolen vehicle system feed nationally. There’s more to how this mistake developed than we know. According to the articles I’ve read it appears the vehicle they were using had also been reported stolen at some point which contributed to it. (I got the impression it was already recovered though. But it can still remain the stolen vehicle system as recovered.)

I watched the video but have no sound, but in this case it doesn't matter because the tweet says "at gunpoint" which is just a flat out lie. At no point in the video does any of the officers even put his hand on his gun, much less draw it.

I would say if the mistake is not the fault of the officers than the biggest problem is that they felt the need to cuff the kid. But the system should be looked at heavily.

Some yes and some no. I assume it depends where you live and past experiences. Didn’t know that’s the point you were trying to make.

My point is that people of color live in fear of law enforcement, and the video above illustrates why. This is why there is a defund the police movement, because people of color see law enforcement as a threat.

Which is the problem. This is one of the professions where you CANT HAVE IDIOTS.

Imagine if we allowed “just a few” idiots who couldn’t do their job correctly to be airline pilots or nuclear plant workers!

I think that is kind of his point. If the media wouldn't push the narrative that much, they wouldn't as much.
You have it backwards. People of color bring these stories to the media, which then share them. They aren’t making it up - POC are outraged and have had enough of this bullshit so they are sharing their stories with the folks that have cameras and buy ink by the barrel.

I’m very pro LE but during the felony stop the officers certainly had their firearms out...and at least one would have had a shotgun on the back window. Typically speaking, that is.

Once the occupants are extracted and the vehicle made safe the officers will put away their firearms.

The cuffing of minors is somewhat debatable. In my opinion anyone obviously over 10 years of age would probably be cuffed. It depends of course. I can imagine a six year old being escorted out of the danger area, searched and placed into the back seat of a patrol along with a sibling who has been searched. That’s just my judgement.

Are people of color police officers?

This. . . some professions can get away with a few idiots. These guys have guns and the cover of enforcing the law.

Because they got the state wrong, but number correct, when pulling them over? That means they should be defunded? What was the threat to life in this instance? Are you unable to look at each situation objectively?

Agreed. Journalism is a safe place for them...but that little secret has been out for years. :)

I’m not saying they should be defunded, but confusing states isn’t an acceptable mistake when lives are on the line. Just like executing a no-knock warrant on the wrong address isn’t an acceptable mistake.

Drug manufacturers have strict liability for defects and these guys have qualified immunity. How does that make sense?

How does this happen exactly? Completely wrong state plate and vehicle type. Why is there no description of the vehicle associated with the stolen vehicle plate #? This is a classic communication breakdown. How can LE safely and effectively carry out their duties if the information they receive cannot be relied upon?

Instead of just adding more officers, perhaps consider implementing better technology so LE can do their jobs more efficiently and effectively.

These folks don't seem to be in fear of the police.

Not sure how many POC really are, but no one is sure. Except the folks with the loudest voices, or so they would have you believe.
