For years I've watched Iowa on 4th and one with a fullback two tight ends try to over power 10 guys waiting for them up the middle with a slow developing play. This time it was no different. did not get the first down. What saved us was an even dumber move by Lovie Smith. Called two time outs with Iowa on the Illinois 40 yard line with 2 minutes to go

I'm guessing there was some analytics somewhere that showed the conversion rate on 4th and 1 was like 70% or something. It seems going for it on 4th is the rule anymore and not the exception, especially when on the otherside of the 50 yard line.

It was very poorly executed more than anything I think. When I watched the replay, it looked like it was supposed to go straight ahead and to the left of the center's hip, but that got blown up, and Akrum tried to cut it right....no dice. It ended up being "slow developing" but I don't think it was supposed to be that at all.

I'd be surprised if we aren't better than 70% on 4th and 1.

I thought BF called a great game.....our offense looks more diverse than it has since Hayden was on the sidelines. We can pick out calls that didn't work, but our offense put up 38 points?
Brian Ferenz is a good co-ordinator, but he has been a poor learner on these 4th and 1 plays up the middle, has failed several times this year already running up the middle on 4th and one. Hopefully he will learn some new plays on 4th and 1.

On 3rd and one, fourth and one, throw the damn ball, like Illinois did. What better opportunity is there for a big play than when 11 guys are within five yards of the LOS and all are fired up to stop the run? Throwing for a long gain in those situations couldn't be easier. Again, Illinois demonstrated that yesterday. Why can't Iowa's coaches figure that out?

Wadley was hit in the backfield first by the DT that Welsh whiffed on. Can't get 1 yard when guys miss blocks.

It wasn't a dumb play call, our line has to be physical enough to convert that play, especially against a team like Illinois. He was challenging them. Our O-line needs to be more physical if we are going to play well the rest of the season. The same can be said for the D-line, they played poorly yesterday. Of course, several of our linebackers (with the exception of Josie) and safety's didn't tackle well either, and were out of position on the long running plays that Illinois broke on us. The Illini ran for over 200 yards on us and they ranked last in the BIG in rushing coming into the game.

Does anyone know what our stats are for 4th/1 this year? Teams can't be 100% otherwise everyone would do it. I don't know our percentage but it seems like our conversion rate is fairly decent.

It doesn't matter what the play call is on 4th and 1. If they don't have the center covered, the QB takes the snap and gets a yard.
This is correct. It should be an automatic call for the center and QB. The rest of the team doesn't need to move out of their stance. Just have the center snap it and go straight ahead. Usually will get 2-3 yards. Not covering the center is a huge mistake by the defense.

Yes, what Iowa's coaches need to do to be more successful is to copy Illinois. Can you break down the ratio of what Iowa has done on 3rd and 4th and 1 this year, pass vs. run? Would you advocate that we throw the ball every time in those situations? Some of the time?

I don't like the play (or plays) either. Even when it works, which it often does. The slow developing is the zone blocking scheme. And that doesn't happen every time we run this, so this play, is actually at least two different plays.
