Baer Is A Big Bonus From Bettendorf

Freshman year he was a walk-on who averaged 4.8 pts.
Sophomore yr he is scholarship who averages 7.5 pts.

Today, against Penn. St. Baer had 20 points and
10 rebounds. Best 6th man in the Big Ten who can
energize a team and has basketball smarts. Today, he
was 4 for 4 from 3 point land.

I can't believe how well he can hit the three-pointers. I think that one thing that helps the young Hawkeyes is that these kids are smart players. The Iowa Hawkeyes are not a bunch of dumb jocks. This team has a very high basketball IQ, and Baer is a big part of that. .

True. Iowa gave him a shot, and he has turned out better than anyone could have imagined. Fran on even his most optimistic day couldn't have seen Baer becoming this good this fast. Baer would be impactful even if he couldn't shoot, but now that he can knock down 3's he's really, really good. I believe he took just 1 3-pointer his senior year of high school and now he's a guy you like to see shooting. Unreal.

Great point Dodger. Its funny with everything that goes on here about recruiting rankings, you just don't know. No one including Fran had any idea what we would get from Baer. If Nick was joining the team next year, or the year after, he probably doesn't get the chance to play with us bringing in three or four highly ranked guys like the Mcafferys boys, Nunge, and Weiskamp. He did get the chance a couple of years ago, and man has he made the most of it! Good fortune all the way around.

Baer was pretty much the only dude on the team who looked like he belonged on the floor against Nova last year in the tournament

The fact that he's getting consistent with the 3 is HUGE. Not just for points, but he can stretch defenses out better, which helps all our other bench players get space to make plays.

He's consistent with the 3 ball AND he's quick on the bounce. He can drive you, he can shoot over you, all he needs to do is add a pump fake and pick up some cheap fouls!

I hope he and all of his teammates continue to work in their ball handling. Seems to me that's their biggest overall biggest collective weakness, and what could make him a true weapon.

He certainly can play 3 when we are in zone...we played pretty good zone defense with Pemsl and Baer on wings and Cook at center.
