Balls. Campbell has em’ - Ferentz doesn’t.

Beth isn't going to have the same conversation with both of them, because she isn't going to fire both HCs in the same year. Ferentz has longer history and more goodwill built up than McCaffery. Ferentz will be the HC in 2025. McCaffery could be vulnerable if this season goes sideways.

Lifelong Lions fan here - so watching Campbell always go on it on 4th down is both awesome and terrifying. I don’t think he’s seen a 4th down that he doesn’t want to go for…and with that offense, you really can’t blame him. But while fun, it’s also what probably lost the NFC championship game for them last year (could have kicked a FG to go up 17 but went for it, didn’t get it, and 49ers scored a TD to cut it to 7 and totally changed the momentum of the game).

That said, I don’t blame the decision because that’s exactly the attitude that had turned the franchise around and got them to that point. But it reminds me that all things in moderation is probably best. So something between the ultra conservative Ferentz and balls on fire Campbell would be good.

Which could put them both in line for replacement within 12 months. Fran this Spring, Kirk in a year. Many speculate that he’ll retire once he gets the Wins record

That's a good way to put it. Campbell is on the extreme opposite end of Ferentz, so naturally bitter fans will gravitate to such extreme differences.

He didn’t play well, but Detroit’s D was suffocating. It’s going to be interesting to see if they go with Darnold or JJ McCarthy into next year.
The one thing I'll say is that it was curious to me that as the game wore on, O'Connell never adjusted to Detroit's aggressiveness with their no-name patchwork defense.

If the games play out to seed, the Vikings are basically a win away from playing Detroit again.

I wonder if the Vikings were scaling back at times as the game got away from them, and didn't just empty the kitchen sink revealing their hand for a potential future matchup.

If they play again, and Minnesota does the same sh** it did NOT handling the blitz, then that's an indictment on O'Connell. But we'd have to cross that bridge if we ever get there.

Which is funny because while many thought at a certain point that this was a hot seat season for Fran, some fans backed off on that talk because of how bad the team was "expected" to be going into the season.

Then they played well enough for a stretch to give people hope........until reality hit, and in particular against decent conference competition, and we're back to where we started with wanting Fran gone sooner than later. :)

Also, for clarification fans would be much more in favor of buying out Fran's contract than Ferentz's at this point IF they had to choose, or should I say, that is how the university feels.

Hope that helps! :D

I agree with you. I was reacting to a comment suggesting that Beth should have the same conversation with both coaches, and tell them that they are gone. I don't think that is realistic. For both coaches to be gone in the next 12 months, Ferentz would have to retire.

God it’s fun watching a coach that believes in his offense and is willing to press a bit. Ferentz would have punted right there for sure. Difference between winners and losers.

Side question - what record would a coach like Dan Campbell have had at Iowa (with the Defenses we typically have) compared to Ferentz? I take the over..
No balls? Sounds like a bullshit personal opinion.

As long as we are fantasizing. What record Kirk would have with on offense last year and last years defense this year.

That is plausible though, that Ferentz retires after 2025.

I will be absolutely f***ing stunned if Ferentz is still here by 2029 and we haven't at least made the CFP in that time frame, let alone competed for a conference title.

That's when we can start treating Beth Goetz the same way you all treated Barta.

Well, there's no way either HC makes it much longer, so, I'd imagine some friction could be easily navigated for a couple years.
True. What are they gonna do, lose?
