Band?

I know Iowa always took their band to an away B1G game each year in the past. Did they do that this year or are they going to Neb. Would be cool if they would be able to go.

They did go to ISU so maybe that was their one road trip.

Why would it be cool? I would say it would be a waste of my University's money and resources. Not to mention I'm sure there's plenty of band members that will want to spend the Thanksgiving weekend with family

It would not surprise me if they did, at least for this season. They just got new uniforms, so that's a fair trade off. I would be disappointed if it was long-term. It's nice for the bands to visit each other. On that note, I don't make it to every game anymore-have we hosted a visiting band this year, or recently?

I know for the last few years the band travels to Iowa State..... when Iowa State come to Iowa City they will them travel to a B10 game. They traveled to Purdue last year and Iowa State in 2013 and 2015.

I talked to one of the directors about exactly this at the ISU game. He said that in an ISU road year the "whole band" road trip is the ISU game. When ISU is at home they go on another trip. pamarcole is correct.

Budgetary reasons? Our dept has financial issues? I thought they were doing quite well

Don't think the band members should be too disappointed. Looks like they'll have a great weekend in Indianapolis plus a trip to an elite bowl game. Doubt they'll look back at 2015 and say "boy, I wish we had gone to Northwestern."

Yes, ISU will likely be the only away trip on years we play there. Last year the trip to Purdue was the first time in a while the band took an away trip. Next year it could be a trip to Minnesota.

And just because the athletic department has money, it doesn't mean they want to spend it on the band. It'll be interesting to see how it works if we make the playoffs..

It is. Lost revenue in ticket sales at a number of B1G "host" stadiums and transportation expenses to the visiting bands. I miss it.

There are venues in the B1G where an AD and Coach would find the money to take their band.

I'm not saying they aren't up for the trips. A lot of them are, yes. But again, budgets. Trip to ISU + trip to Nebraska, not in the budget.

It's a shame, but I know that Iowa still has it better than some other bands. I remember Minnesota telling us they were having to do a fundraiser to go to their bowl game. The bowl game!

Normally I would understand but with the chance to go 12-0 on the season, thought it would be a good time to pack the band as well.

They will still probably get to go to Indy and a good bowl, if not CFB.

Not as expensive as going to a bowl game, no.

I remember seeing about 6+ buses, and then you need to feed 250+ people 3 meals on a day trip like that (usually Hyvee breakfast items, catered lunch, and then a box lunch/dinner). It all adds up.

Yes, our band has it good better than others but by all means, it doesn't have a hefty budget.

Climb into your wayback machine and travel to Indy in 1980 for the Final Four of Purdue, UCLA, Louisville, and Iowa. I was there and embarrassed that Iowa was the ONLY one of that Final Four that did NOT send its band. By chance I saw AD Bump Elliott in the arena and asked him why the Hawkeyes were the only ones without a band. He mumbled something unintelligible and almost RAN away.

The Iowa athletic department handed out...ya can't make this stuff up...kazoos so we Iowa fans could play the fight song. Talk about embarrassing. And the Purdue band felt so bad for us they actually played the Iowa Fight Song for us in the semifinal vs. Louisville.

This thread brought back that memory, so I had to pass it along. Sorry...

Last year at Madison Square Garden for the games played there they had local HS kids for a Hawkeye Band. Gave them tshirts and sheet music. They had so-so renditions of On Iowa and fight song. It was pretty lame. Other than Syracuse they did the same for other teams

The Athletic Dept wouldn't even spring for those.
