Beard to Lehigh(at the risk of pizzing off Spooner!)

Is there a PSU guy who can jump in here. Im wondering how close was Beard to Dean in wrestle offs? Also wondering if any Lehigh vs PSU next year, that would be a match to watch for.

97 was loaded last year. Im not sure who all is leaving but Beard is in the mix now based on the last second loss to Dean. There is so many toss up matches at this weight. Cant wait for next year, lets get the season started.

Do u ever why people come on the board to just blatantly lie?
Inferiority complex. That’s why they lie, and come here to troll. Even when little bro has some success they are still little bro. They prove it every time they come here to start crap.

They’ve been good to me on BWI for the most part, bad blood had really died down lately.

They're both All-American's, so it stands to reason they might have some competitive matches, especially at 197 (there are no Ed Banachs around at the moment to toss people on their heads). One made an NCAA Final previously, then redshirted, then a COVID year, there's your guy.

I believe I once heard Jeff Byers, who does the play by play for Penn State wrestling matches, say their wrestle-off was a one point win by Dean on a late TD. I think it was said either during a match or in the 20 min pre-match show he does. I had read that before he said it and recall thinking “okay, now it’s confirmed.”

I have no reason to not believe the more "in the know" crowd. I find it odd and really kind of low class, for a coach to choose a transfer over someone he recruited and has been in the room for several years when the matchup is so close. Clear cut winner, then I absolutely agree to go with the wrestle-off winner. Overtime loss, then go with the guy who has been there. Being so cut throat will get you sooner or later.

You go with the guy that beats more people outside the room you're in, regardless of "wrestle-off" result. Everytime.

And a transfer is recruited, and in this day and age recruited and very possibly and/or likely paid for, along with potentially being tampered with (stunning revelation I know - and this applies to all sports). Suriano being the obvious poster child for the "new" way of doing things, but he was essentially a free agent, so slightly different scenario. It's gonna get worse before it gets better. Enjoy.

I don't know if it will happen in my lifetime, but in the future you could see the first 4 Time NCAA Wrestling Champion who did it with 2 different schools. That's where this NIL thing is headed, IMO.

So you're saying Spencer is transferring???

Not sure Cael cares what you think, given that he "chose" the guy that won the wrestle off and the NCAA's. Guess he was right.

when is this wishful thinking going to end? dean won ncaa's. clearly the right choice.

I'm guessing it was predetermined that Dean was going to be Penn States 197 lb. starter when he agreed to come. You don't bring in NCAA Finalists and sit them on your bench (and if Dean says I want to wrestle 184, Cael says thanks but no thanks, we're covered there.)

he was brought in because he was seen as an upgrade. if beard had beaten him at wrestle offs AND demonstrated superiority against the field, he would have been the guy. he did not, so he was not.

what is the point in trying to find some sort of downside or negative consequence of a guy joining the team, demonstrating he was the best at the weight, and then winning ncaa's? cael made the right choice every step of the way. why be upset about that? it comes off as soft to me. it's sports.

(not saying you, @23 so far specifically, are whining, but there are a lot of hawk fans out there who have been over the last few years and it's weak.)

But, we like our guys. And you should operate the same way, right? Lol

It’s soooo obvious now. We put our guys first and you are all about winning. Loosers….

I'm definitely not whining about it, I just think the scenario I laid out is exactly what happened. That said, if Beard all of a sudden in one off-season becomes the next Spencer Lee, comes in and hammers Dean and everybody else, then you got yourselves some rich people problems. Ha!

To be clear, are you saying that if Henson had stayed and Real Woods beat him in a close wrestleoff, Henson should have been given the start over Woods?

The other part of this equation that I had kind of forgotten about..........if there is no COVID, Dean probably never leaves Cornell. That was still up in the air I think relative to the Ivies potentially cancelling again (makes me wonder a little bit if Yianni bails if they cancel again, interesting to ponder anyway).

Its unlikely but not out of the realm of possibility. I think Hawk coaches might have wrestleoffs but not make decision until after Midlands. Maybe PSU works the same with Southern Scuffle.

Hopefully he gets on the same side of Dean so he can do what Jenkins did to Taylor then Warner could be on the other side and beat him in the finals!
Hope he sees him first round and knocks dean into the wrestle back from hell.

Sure - what you write here is true. But the OP seemed to suggest that a team member recruited out of high school should be given preferential treatment over a transfer when it’s a close call. I guess a better response from me would be the team is the team; once you assemble your team, you let who starts be settled on the mat. (“On the mat”, as you point out, can be more than just the wrestle-off.) But I think you risk major problems if you instead show preferential treatment.

The butt hurt birds have to have something to sling s**t at, all they have is Lee coming back to try and get his 4th. That is if Lee is ok with wrestling this garbage folkstyle.
