Just a beautifully played, fluid form of bball. much easier for the officials.
No groans from me. IOWA tries to play based on how the freedom of movement rules are written, but its simply not officiated that way - especially in the Big Ten.I know this will elicit a number of groans, but I think Iowa still plays the game a bit like this (i.e. play defense without fouling). Unfortunately, we are an outlier in a game full of defenses that pride themselves on being "physical."
Yes, often there is 3-4 feet between a defender and the guy he is guarding, especially on the perimeter. With no 3 point basket the rule was to try not to let a perimeter player past you on a drive to the bucket. Very little bodying up and chesting up an offensive player.Jump ball at beginning. Opposing center lets Lew Alcindor (Kareem) jump by himself and tries to block where he tips the ball.
Then, on UCLA's 1st possession, who brings up the ball when there is a little pressure? The over 7 foot tall center, Alcindor.
Look at the defense. Look where shots are taken from. Different game.
The frame rate might have slowed it down some but remember those late '60s Alcindor teams had Lucius Allen and Mike Warren at guard and they could fly downcourt on the fast break. That video was in slow motion, right?
With today's athletes, the shot clock and the 3 pt line, teams would score 150 points a game under that style of play
And you don't think things may have been a bit different then if there was a shot clock and a 3-point line? Pete Maravich would have had 50 a game. That video was in slow motion, right?

The shot clock would have made no difference to Pete/LSU. They averaged 75 shots/game the was it was. Iowa's offense oriented team only averages about 62 in today's shot clock game. Maybe the 3 pointer would have gotten him up to 50/ games, since he was already at 44/game the way it was...And you don't think things may have been a bit different then if there was a shot clock and a 3-point line? Iowa's '69-70 team averaged 100 points per game in the Big 10 without the shot clock or 3 point shot. That video was in slow motion, right?

Correct. Today's Iowa team averages 62 FGA/game compared to '69-'70's, 72 FGA/game average. It was later after Bobby Knight fouling defense, 4 corners and Judd ( others ) holding the ball because they had no chance to win straight up...Iowa's '69-70 team averaged 100 points per game in the Big 10 without the shot clock or 3 point shot.
