Figured his commitment deserved its own thread (and to hopefully have his name spelled correctly! Ha!).

Looks like he's gonna give it a go for Football and Wrestling. He's got another year of High School, and not sure of his overall ranking in Wrestling, but this kid is an Athlete. Great get for the Hawks, IMO. (maybe takes over for Cass if he can make it work, looks like he's gonna be a HWT., maybe on the smallish side depending on where he projects for Football - LB or TE??).

Congrats to Ben and his Family. Welcome aboard.

Realize that if the Hawks go Bowling then he will not get started with wrestling until January. I’m hopeful the NCAA will eventually push wrestling to a spring only sport.

It's going to be a delicate decision. To be a legit threat at HWT, I'm guessing he's gonna need to be 250-260. That eliminates every position but OLine/DLine, imo.

The Sindlinger comparison is quite different because when Mark played football, there were very few linemen over 275+.

My opinion doesn't mean much. but I think he will end up only being a one sport guy.

He can play linebacker or TE at 250, or even DE like Joe Evans

I believe that Cassar was 237 when he won the championship.

Oh I can see him at 265 to 270 before it’s all said and done. Defense end and tight end I predict he will end up there. Also predicting that he’ll be an NCAA heavyweight champion you heard it from me. Kid is going to end up with a tough decision.

Anybody know what is the lightest weight class a dual football-wrestling athlete has ever wrestled at? I assume most were heavyweights.

Jordan McLaughlin (sp?) went 1-2 for Iowa at 197, filling in for Danimal in 2006/2007. He was a Linebacker and then Fullback.

That's the lightest I know of, and only for Iowa.

Seems like TE would make more sense size wise if he wants to get up to 250-260. The trend for linebackers is to be smaller and faster to run sideline to sideline. He could be a physical blocking TE at that size. Anybody know how fast he is?

His team finished 2nd in a relay at Drake Relays in the spring. He can motor. I would see him as a tight end or LB. Could grow another inch or two.

I believe he was recruited as a linebacker but that can change of course. I could see him growing into a DE and he could be 270 or more and play there.

Hey, where the hell are you old-timers on this one? Most of you are probably at the Airliner, or at Joe’s waiting for last call. Well it’s time to get off the bar-stool and get home to your typewriter.

Sherwyn Thorson (Fort Dodge, Iowa), probably one of the greatest athletes to put on both the University of Iowa wrestling singlet, and the University of Iowa football pads. An NCAA heavyweight wrestling champion, and a football all-american guard/linebacker. Probably weighted 225-230 lbs. but an extremely imposing, physical athlete.

Ben Kueter has a great future in the Black and Gold. But he has some work left to do. Sherwyn Thorson was a true great and is remembered well by University of Iowa fans.

Pretty sure David Z won it for ISU one year weighing in the 220's. I think it's a tough load for 4/5 years, but I love seeing the attitude to take it on. Congrats on the commit young man. Go Hawks

Obviously pictures can be deceiving but this kid doesn’t quite look like he’s got the size/build for B10 football. He looks pretty lean to me. I’ve only seen a couple of his matches and he seems to know his way around a wrestling mat however. Looks like one heck of a 197 lber. I can’t recall the last time the Hawks had a starting Heavy this small (Wes Hand?).

Keep in mind he is only a junior. Plenty of time to put on some size. Besides, 19 months ago, he was a state champ at 160lbs. Guessing he's not done growing just yet.

Aside from the Training Table feedbag and weight room at Iowa. Those boys that put in the work go thru some hellish transformation over time.

He's a junior in high school. Two years from now he'll look a lot different I'm sure. Little common sense should come into play here.

This whole post makes me go...huh? 197? This kid is a 220 lb junior in HS and has been growing by leaps and bounds. And he's at least 3 years from "starting." And Wes Hand was small?

Jack Campbell is tearing it up at linebacker and he’s over 250 I believe.... he’s a little taller but like everyone says this kid might have some growing to do.... I like him as a 265 pound TE

What did you do look at his 160 lb picture? 😉

A 6'3" 220 lb kid who is a junior in high school is plenty big enough for B10 football. Dallas Clark played in the NFL at 6"3" 250ish. I think Ben could put on 20 lbs in 2-3 years pretty easily. TJ Hoeckensen is currently playing in the NFL at 248 lbs (at 6'5" 6'6"ish you could call that slender). Noah Fant 249 (6'5") right now in the NFL. My guess is all of those kids came in around 220. I know TJ personally, he was not 220 lbs as a junior in high school.

Biggest current LB on the Hawks roster: 243 (6'5" so probably pretty lean).

I think he's fine.

Eventual 300 pound all American center Bruce Nelson was under 220 coming out of high school.

I looked at his commitment post and thought that kid can play in the B10? I’ve got 4 years of eligibility left……
You're a good dude So Cal, but your eyes may have deceived you a little bit on this one. No big deal. He'll look considerably different in 3 years, I'm convinced of that. He's a great get for either Sport.

Yeah that 7 lbs is a huge difference.

Are you really this obtuse? The kid isn’t even a month in to his junior year of HS. Hard to believe anyone would look at pics of him and not think he has the looks of a major college athlete.
