Ben Kueter commits to Iowa Football and Wrestling

Yeah that 7 lbs is a huge difference.

Are you really this obtuse? The kid isn’t even a month in to his junior year of HS. Hard to believe anyone would look at pics of him and not think he has the looks of a major college athlete.
actually yes. the nature of the position is changing. it's getting smaller and faster. you're more likely to see a 230 lb linebacker than a 250. Guys like Roquan Smith, Devin White, Bobby Wagner, etc.. are the future.

Didn’t think what I said was so offensive. I saw his commitment photo ( take a second look, if you strain your eyes you can see a little muscle definition in his arms) and thought damn he’s a D1 football player/ Hwt? I recalled watching a match he competed in like 4 months ago at 195 where he looks significantly leaner than his opponent. I hope he’s a 4X natty champ at Hwt for the Hawks. And I agree with Spooner he has every look of a D1 college athlete. A D1 197lber, a starting pitcher, a shooting guard, light skinned wide receiver………

So in other words, you’re just that obtuse. Rather surprised coming from you.

They make weight classes for a reason in wrestling don't they? I'm sure you can find guy's over 250, I think you get what I was saying but wanted to be an ass and argue semantics. It's fine, that's what these message boards are for.

It just seemed like an odd supporting point. Linebackers are so much lighter now--look at this guy who's 7 pounds less than that!

weren’t you the one arguing “schematics” ? I was wrong he was a little lighter than I thought you got me 😂 I am excited to get the kid on the bus.....coaches will figure out where to get him on the field

A 6'3" 220 lb kid who is a junior in high school is plenty big enough for B10 football. Dallas Clark played in the NFL at 6"3" 250ish. I think Ben could put on 20 lbs in 2-3 years pretty easily. TJ Hoeckensen is currently playing in the NFL at 248 lbs (at 6'5" 6'6"ish you could call that slender). Noah Fant 249 (6'5") right now in the NFL. My guess is all of those kids came in around 220. I know TJ personally, he was not 220 lbs as a junior in high school.

Biggest current LB on the Hawks roster: 243 (6'5" so probably pretty lean).

I think he's fine.
you from Chariton?..... I grew up there.... my sister used to babysit TJ

And there aren’t any two weight classes only seven pounds apart. Even those half the size of the guys being discussed.

The biggest linebacker on Iowa is 243. That's the point. The average weight on the team is 222. It's not a difficult point to understand unless you want to be difficult.

8lbs, I guess maybe that's where you draw the line for being a big difference. I think js8793 said it best.

Eight pounds for kids weighing 125 lbs. Do the maths…
125-133
133-141
141-149
149-157
157-165

I know, they are all smaller than the guys we are talking about. Like Js said, the point was 243 was the BIGGEST LB on the team. But whatever, you obviously have your take and I have mine.

Bottom line is, I am excited to have Ben as a Hawk! He is certainly big enough to play LB or grow into a TE/DE. But my heart wants him to focus on wrestling. I hope he can do both a high high level!

Right on.

And just to clarify, I don’t see weight of an athlete as being most important factor of position played. While there might be trends on weight, up or down, desire and ability are probably more important in the big picture.

I’m probably wrong on the weight here again cause I’m working off my shitty memory but all this weight talk got me thinking...... I think when Dan MacCarney played oline at Iowa he was only about 225 pounds..... it’s freaking crazy not only the size but the athleticism of these athletes at their size nowadays
Iowa football under Ferentz has always recruited a lot of TE/LB type guys.... some grow into linemen either side of the ball.... some wind up a fullback TE LB
Point is they’re “football” players....the ones that maybe don’t start are still great special team players
Norm Parker used to say just get me football players..... we’ll get them on the bus and figure out where to pit them later
It’s always great when we get the home grown kids and watch them develop..... I personally will be surprised if he actually wrestles too..... but I’m glad he’s a Hawk
edit: McCarney played OG at 229 pounds as a Senior .... found an old 1974 roster
