Michigan native Ben VanSumeren has found a college home in Iowa City. The ultra athletic and versatile 6-foot-3, 225-pound VanSumeren verbally committed to the University of Iowa today after landing a scholarship offer from the Hawkeyes this fall and visiting campus a couple weeks ago.

“I’m going to be a Hawkeye,” VanSumeren told HawkeyeReport.com.

At one time a Western Michigan commit as a junior, VanSumeren picked up new offers his senior year from Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Missouri, Cincinnati, and Air Force, but quickly found the right fit once he visited the Hawkeyes.

“I just wanted to be at such a respected program and with respected coaches like they have at Iowa,” said VanSumeren. “I think the Hawkeye coaching staff teaches great values and I want to be around people with values like that. Also, I want to play in the Big Ten and I want to play against the best competition.”

“In the end, Iowa offers all of that,” he continued. “That’s what led me to make this decision.”

Earlier this year, VanSumeren showed that he is one of the top athletes in the Midwest by posting the top overall rating at the Nike Opening Regional in Cleveland, which earned him a spot in the top ten on the national leaderboard. At the event, he posted a 4.76 laser timed forty, a 4.03 shuttle, and a 40" vertical.

As a senior at Garber High School in Essexville, MI, VanSumeren hauled in 85 catches for 1,259 yards and 13 touchdowns on offense to go along with 43 tackles and 4 TFL on defense. At Iowa, he is expected to start out at outside linebacker.

“I haven’t played a ton of linebacker in high school, but I just love playing football and my favorite part about it is hitting people, so I’ll get a good chance to do that at linebacker,” VanSumeren said. “I think the combination with my size and speed and the physicality that I bring to the field, it will be a good fit and I look forward to playing at the highest level in the Big Ten.”

VanSumeren, who plans to return to Iowa City in December for his official visit, is happy to have the weight of his college decision off his shoulders today.

“It feels great,” VanSumeren said. “It feels great that everything that I’ve worked for is coming together.”

Overall, VanSumeren is commitment No. 14 for the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Class of 2018 and the first from the state of Michigan.

See highlights from VanSumeren’s senior year at Garber in the video below.

Wht defensive position was he playing in high school? Looks like we found another gem passed over and missed. He will be a more physical presence at backer, something we need.

By the way, that's Ben's "little" brother Alex in that picture along with their parents. Alex is already like 6-2, 220 lbs in 8th grade. He'll be one to watch down the road for sure.

I suppose it's possible, but he runs too well/too good an athlete not to try him out at LB First. Kulick and Ross are very good FB players, but if you put them at LB and asked them to tackle guys in space it wouldn't go well.

The athletic gap between Iowa and the Ohio States and Penn States continues to close. Two more strong recruiting classes and we’ll be at even strength

I hear you dodger. My thoughts are if we can get an even higher level LB, and this beast of a young man is the level we have at fullback, We would have more talent all over. The facts are the guy is in 8th grade though so who knows what will pan out. It's awesome we have Ben for now and he looks to be a stud. That could only help us if we did want his brother in the future.

Edit: I'm a huge believer in the FB being a major roll in the offense.

Not to be Debby Downer but if we want to CONSISTENTLY be on THAT level, it's going to take even better recruiting and more than a couple of years

You're right. We stood no chance against either of them this year and looked sooooo unathletic playing them. Totally outclassed. :)

^ it's building man. Rome wasn't built over night. The staff seems to be focused on getting a higher level athlete. I agree it's going to take time but even in the last 12 months it seems to have become a larger focus with quality over quantity mentality. This guy is a 2 star. I would be shocked if he stayed a 2 star. You don't grade out in the 99th percentile of a Nike camp and stay a 2 star.

I love the way he hits on defense, and finishes runs on offense. And, then there is this ...

going to disagree all it takes is to keep these kids committed and staying in the program. players like Jewell, Greenway, King, Klug all proved to be more than competitive. what has hurt Iowa in the past have been injuries and defections.

Every team has injuries. We have always lacked a little bit of talent, especially on the national scale.

true but Iowa has not been in the position to just plug and play, that is changing, just look at this year RT Wirfs fall into that category as he was a US Army AA and is now starting, DE Epenesa is another US Army AA but he is behind 3rd year starter Hesse who replace All BT Ott. but if Ott went down to injury Epenesa is more than capable of becoming the next plug and player,

this is what the new coaches are trying to get.
