Best American Rock Band EVER....

I really miss the days of throwing myself into the pit. I damn near got trampled to death at the Monsters of Rock (Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth) concert at the 5 Seasons Center in 89 or so. Big fat guy hit me with a forearm shiver that knocked me groggy and then my brother like yanked me and I snapped back to reality in a swirling mess of people. I would sweat totally through my jeans.

Now I am a middle aged waste with degrees and an executive job.

Territorial Pissings.

Nah. Smells Like Teen Spirit, of course.

Smells Like Teen Spirit is their big video hit, but I consider Come As You Are as the most defining song of Nirvana’s career. And my personal favorite is the post death You Know You’re Right.

I was big into grunge at the time but preferred the better performers in Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog (yes I know basically, half Soundgarden and half Pearl Jam), and Stone Temple Pilots (yes I know, not from Seattle but similar enough I lump it together). Over time, my appreciation for Nirvana has grown especially as I started to sample outside of their hits.

Songs like Sappy, Sliver, Marigold (written by Grohl and an early indicator of where the Foo Fighters were going), Aneurysm, Even in His Youth, and Dive which were unknown/really obscure at the time.

Ur reaching quite a bit. I mean Carol King even has a few songs better than that one.

Funny, I looked up top radio hits and it's not even in the top 100. Maybe just my taste, and the fact that it hit exactly when I got my license, but I honestly expected it to be top 10. There's no accounting for everyone else's poor taste ;)

Few years back I was at a Black Label Society concert - was in gen admission on the floor and the pit formed. When Stillborn started I got rolled hard. Made me feel really old.

Motley Crue
GNR
Aerosmith
KISS

Top 4. The key word is "ROCK" bands boys. Any body who mentions Night Ranger, Chicago, Journey or Boston, needs to listen to one week of HairNation on XM to see what "Rock Band" means.

Going to disagree with ya Hammer. Rock = almost every band mentioned including Night Ranger, Chicago, Journey and Boston. Those bands don’t fit into the category of Heavy Metal, Glam or Hair Bands, nut they most certainly are rock.

If this tournament thing happens, there needs to be, at least, a field of 64.

My top 10....not necessarily my favorite bands and some I hate, but I’m judging them on overall contribution and in no particular order.

Metallica
Bon Jovi
Motley Crue
REO Speedwagon
Aerosmith
Van Halen
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Nirvana
KISS
Guns N Roses
+1 Foo Foghters

All 1 seeds with The Foo likely a 2 seed.

If you're gonna say Foo Fighters and not even put Nirvana on your list then we're gonna have to go to fight bar. Dave Grohl is a talented drummer and I'll just leave it at that.

Have you seen FF live? Grohl is one hell of a front man. He’s also an extremely talented musician overall. FF is one of the last remaining, true rock bands in existence, that is still putting out quality new music. Rock is almost dead, but FF are one of the last bands carrying that torch. I’m not saying they are #1, but the are in the mix. My list includes them and Nirvana. Nirvana led the grunge era and isn’t even my favorite grunge band, but I recognize their importance. FF took what Cobain threw away and made more hit songs and has the longevity that Nirvana didn’t.

If we personal taste and feelings, which of course isn’t any fun, and go by total overall record sales, the top 10 are.

Eagles
Aerosmith
Bruce Springsteen
Metallica
Bon Jovi
Linkin Park
Fleetwood Mac
Guns N‘ Roses
Santana
Prince

What’s truly sad is that Justin Bieber, if a band and if rock and if from the US, would rank 3rd on this list.

Damn straight

Nirvana was a generation defining influence. They defined the 90's.

The Foo Fighters write bubble gum pop and I don't think I could name one song if you put a gun to my head. My Hero? Is that a Foo Fighters song?
Nevermind was a well produced album but the songs just have not stood the test of time. The guitar work is incredibly simple and the lyrics are mostly nonsense wrapped in cynicism. How many contemporary acts would list Nirvana as an influence? Probably zero.

My opinion on Kurt Cobain is that he knew his fame far outpaced his talent and he killed himself because he knew he was a fraud.

I don’t mind In Bloom but the rest is pretty bad. And LOL at Smells Like Teen Spirit as the greatest single of all time? Not even the greatest single of 1992. Here are 5 rock songs from 1992 better than SLTS: Tears In Heaven, Under The Bridge, November Rain, One, Friday I’m In Love.

Still defending Dave Grohl....there are many stories of just how cool he is. Most have seen the video when he brings the kid onstage and the kid shreds Metallica. My story was when they were touring with Motörhead they had a stop in Council Bluffs. Something kept either Lemmy or all of Motörhead from making it to the arena in time for the show. No opening act....and what a cool opener that would have been. Dave came out and talked a bit about a Motörhead’s influence to him and the band, then they broke out into a kick ass version of Ace of Spades. He nailed it. The band nailed it. Great show.
