Let me put it this way...the best guitar player in Nirvana was the drummer.

Nirvana was a generation defining influence. They defined the 90's.

The Foo Fighters write bubble gum pop and I don't think I could name one song if you put a gun to my head. My Hero? Is that a Foo Fighters song?

I have other friends like you. Kurt disciples. Had Kurt been able to function differently and Nirv lasted more than 5 yrs than i would see them differently; probably more like you. I think a number of influences from the Seattle scene have had long lasting impact including Mudhoney, AiC, and Soundgarden. Grohl is an amazing talent. He had to carry Kurt thru a great many live performances.

I actually view Nirvana similarly to how I view Skynyrd. Both are decent bands with some good songs but aren't even the best in their own genre. Nirvana is far from the best grunge band just like LS is far from the best in Southern Rock.

Both have "cult" like fanbases that make it even more annoying.

Grohl is an amazing performer. I just think the Foo Fighters put out really vanilla, boring, cookie cutter music.

A cult fanbase, that's cute. Who can you say is better in their genre than Nirvana? Hell, they practically created the genre.

AiC, Soundgarden, STP, and a few others.

Nirvana is a solid band and I like some of their music but just because they were the first ones to break through doesn't mean they are the best. That being said, there is no grunge rock band that belongs in this thread's conversation.

That's why opinion threads like this are always 18 pages. People just have different tastes and will defend them to the death. Or at least to the fight bar.

You don't get more homely looking than Tom Petty . Hence y they are the greatest American band.

Putting out one of the greatest albums in the history of music with perhaps the greatest single of all time didn't hurt, either ;)
True but if the LV had looked like Steve Buschemi doubt it would have been as popular.

You’re entitled to your stupid and moronic opinion.

The Foo put on the best live performance I’ve seen in person at Rockville in Jax last year when they were in their 24th year of existence. Most bands are safely on their gravy train of playing old hits by now, but the Foo is still creating great, currently relevant music in their third decade of existence. There aren’t too many bands who can say that they’re anything but a nostalgia act or historical footnote in decade three. Even bands I consider excellent in concert like the Offspring and Green Day from the same time period are mostly existing on old music with the current music just being the stuff you’re forced to listen to, to GET to the hits. The Foo meanwhile won five Grammy’s only 5 years ago and of the three albums released in the last 8 years they finished #1, #2 and #1 in the overall US Charts and a greatest hits album released the same time frame finished 11th overall.
