I may be putting the cart before the horse but let's suppose we take care of business at home against Rutgers and WI....

I think this team can be the best since the 2006 team (regular season wise----2000 was better because sweet 16) if there are no more major injuries and Frederick stays on the court and continue this level of production. I don't know his level of health.

But seriously, is there any rother eason we can't PLAUSIBLY "hold serve" at home save for 1 game and also win a few road games out of PUR, MIN, IL, IN?

I see no reason this team can't match the 22-9/23-8 (13-7/14-6) regular season of 2006 and get a 3-5 seed if we can stay healthy, Fran can win some conference tourney games, and play like we have in the first round the past 3 NCAA appearances under Frank. Sweet 16 should be the baseline of where this team ends up assuming the injury bug has been defeated and moved onto other schools.

THOUGHTS?

That team was very good & old (3 senior starters & two juniors, with Haluska as a 4th year junior). Hansen was Big Ten defensive player of the year. You can lament about the loss to NW State but in one-game elimination tourneys that'll happen.

I don't think this years team is as good but it's right up there as the best team since then. Certainly a top 5 Iowa team this century.

Not sure how they rank but I will say this is the best coaching job Fran has done since he's been here. I thought if JBo didn't red shirt could be a bubble team but if he did as he's done we wouldn't be a tourney team not to mention no Nunge or Patrick too. CJF and Connor have played above expectations of many including myself. Kriener has been great off the bench and that biggest thing of all it helps that Luka is playing like an All American.

I'll just say its been a fun ride, and I hope it continues. Unfortunately we're one injury to the wrong guy away from being in deep shite, and you all know who that player is.....

EXACTLY my thoughts going into the season----bubble team like Minny or Depaul or VaTech or NCState if JoBo played. WIth all the these inuries (including JoBO opting to have surgery) I"d have said at BEST 16-15

I'll get back to you mid February....The Uthoff/White team of a few years ago looked like world beaters until mid February came along.

Actually White's senior year was the hottest finish we've had under Fran (minus the NW BTT upset loss), if you don't count the NIT title game run. That team might've missed the tourney without it's great finish.

White/Uthoff team that got up to AP #3 is what I was referencing, yes the team you mentioned actually finished strong until you said it, the dreaded BTT..Fran has been abysmal in that tourney, lets hope that trend ends this year as well.

That year was Iowa's first win in the tourney since they beat Creighton in 2001. I still remember Woodbury getting called for a 3 second violation with 31 seconds on the shot clock. It was against Davidson & I couldn't believe it. Didn't care as the night went on & Iowa dominated, that's about as happy as I've been after an Iowa game.

Yep they at least won the first game, from AP #3 to what were they a 9 seed? Really stunk because they hurt themselves with the seeding and having to face the buzzsaw Gonzaga in the 2nd round.....But yes I was pumped too believe me. If we can get to the Sweet 16 I'll be rioting on the streets.

You are right about one thing .... you are putting the cart before the horse.

I looked at the schedule. There is only 1 game I would put solidly in the W column, and that's Neb at home - a team that already beat these Hawks.

But, on the other hand, there are no certain L's. The Hawks have enough scorers to stay in almost any game. Then it comes down to the end where anything can happen.

I really like this team. But, it's not impossible for them to lose 3 or 4 in a row at any point the remainder of the season.

That 2006 Team was loaded, and if I remember correctly, won the BTT. I think this team is good, and am appreciating the ride. If Joe T can reduce the freshman mistakes and turnovers, play in-your jersey-defense, and hit just a couple more shots per game, this team would take another big step forward. Maybe towards greatness. A lot of pressure or expectation for a freshman who obviously wants to "bring it" every time down the court. I love his attitude, the skills/experience just need to catch up a little. Hopefully they will.

And...CJF, JW, CMac and Luka have to be 100% healthy.

Maybe this will be a year for a deep BTT run and a Sweet 16. Then we can talk 2006.

For sure cart before the horse, but I really like this team and think they can do some really good things.

White/Uthoff team was never ranked higher than 25. White graduated and next years team got to number 3. White/Uthoff did give the worst beat down ever in a 7-10 seed game. Actually thought they could beat Gonzaga.

Hawks won their last 6 conference games and then lost to a bad Penn St. Team in first-round of BTT during Whites senoir season.

Ahh, stand corrected then. It all blurs together with Feb/March fades and 1 and done or not making it....Forgive me, been a long time since 1999 :)

You are forgiven. I agree completely. I am still waiting for a run like 1979-1989. What great times.

Too young to appreciate it, I was a 90s kid 8/9 win and lose to the 1 seed era but vastly enjoyed the 1999 run, had UCONN down in the 2nd half, played them the best of anyone. Fun ride that season was, and here we are..............

You're right, PSU not NW (that was White's junior season) in the BTT. That was the game Fran killed us with a technical in a close one and PSU turned it into a 7 point possession or something and couldn't catch back up.

Whites junior season Hawks got to 10th that year and then tanked. Lost to a bad Illinois team at home in regular season final. Beat northwestern by 26 twice during regular season and then lost them in BTT.

Too early to tell. They are playing well recently, but we’ve seen Iowa teams fall apart before. Hopefully this team has the fight to continue to get better.

If they aren’t doing it already, teams are going to start to hack the crap out of Iowa, daring the refs to call 30+fouls a game, which they won’t. Hopefully, Iowa can fight through the hack-a-thon.
