Best Science Fiction TV Shows of All Time

I was excited for Caprica but SyFy killed it pretty quickly.
I was totally engrossed but then they apparently decided to can it and did a halfhearted wrap up at the end. A shame. It had real promise.

The 2nd season, I assume, would have begun to show us how the toasters transitioned to sentient beings. As the debates about AI swirl in the real world, we need shows that tackle tough questions like that. This show was done well enough that I had hopes they would have done a good job on that tricky question.

I dont get all the love for Andor. It had some really cool parts but was otherwise kinda boring.
Perhaps you should give it a second chance. The meat is in the dialogue. I can see someone being bored if they were say reading hrot while watching it because there is a lot to miss. I would say it's in the same vein as The Wire in that regard.

The movies and other series make it known that the empire is "bad". They blow up nice planets. Andor shows you that the Empire was freaking evil and twisted as fck.

Big Bang Theory

But seriously, if you are a fan of the original Star Trek series check out the podcast “Enterprise Incidents”. They break down each episode and talk about them for 90 to 120 minutes. It’s pretty damn interesting.

I always enjoy The Twilight Zone marathons they have on TV also.

Since this thread is a bat signal to all sci-fi nerds, is Peripheral worth the watch? Prime has been pushing it on me a lot recently.

Apparently more people need to watch The Expanse.
Absolutely.

I read the first book before there was a TV show. When the show came out I was sure the story line would be too hard to follow. I expected it to get cancelled after about 3 episodes. But they pulled it off.

Great show.

Is it too soon to watch it again?

Not counting anything Star Wars related.

1 Firefly
2 BSG
3 Picard S3
4 The Expanse
5 Stranger Things

Where does fantasy fit into this? Seasons one through five of Smallville would be in that list for me.
We should probably do a separate Best Fantasy thread, but you are right that the line between them can be squishy.

For me, Game of Thrones would top that list. Witcher is quite good, imo. The Wheel of Time and Lord of the Rings efforts are decent but don't (yet) live up to the GoT standard.

Frankly, I'm not sure how to classify Smallville. But it was a good show.

Dark Matter

"In the dystopian 27th century, six people wake up on a deserted spaceship with no memory of who they are or what they're doing there. They reluctantly team up and set off to find answers with the help of a female android."

Ya, GoT would top a fantasy list for me
Travelers is a good show. Maybe not top 5 but probably top 20. 8.0 on IMDb.

I like shows with a time travel element. Which reminds me of Continuum.

And then there's Timeless.
I really enjoyed Travelers.

80's for the plot and believability. 00's for that brazillian chick's boobies (which if you google are spectacular).

I'd agree with this. I actually really enjoyed the 00's version as well. Love the presentation in shows of the slow pressure building on a changed social dynamic leading to people just flipping society standards on it's head. Part of what I really enjoyed about Jericho.

Has that show been mentioned yet? It's not a "best of", but it was pretty good.

I loved Jericho. We were so disappointed when it ended.

Yep Jericho was excellent.

I'm reminded of Revolution, too.

Both of those shows were cut short and had weak wind-ups.

Terra Nova was another that started off great and then took a wrong turn, imo. Should have spent more time on developing the prehistoric community before getting all conspiracy-theoryish.

Haven't seen Revolution. Agree on Terra Nova started great but did go off the rails quickly. Felt like it had potential.

I confess, I was part of Jericho's low ratings causing it to be canceled. I found it years after. Same with Eureka, Firefly, Dark Matter and a couple more.

I didn't see Last of Us listed yet, really enjoyed it as well as Severence, Lost in Space (new), Falling Skies and Night Sky.

Falling Skies was great out of the gates, but seemed to have the typical fall off.

I agree with all of that and definitely want to give Dark Matter a shout out.

You know what? There's been a LOT of really good SciFi over the years. Sure, plenty could have been better, and too many met their demise way too soon. But a LOT of really good SciFi.

My dad loved Star Trek in the 70s, introduced me to it when I was little. So it stuck and I have watched SciFi growing up. And there were some BAD 70s / 80s sci fi as the genre was picking up. But all the examples of shows that went off the rails after a good run really should be a part of why Star Trek should be considered the best. No disrespect for Twilight Zone and Amazing Stories tho.

Calm down guy, we get it, we are truly blessed with the sci fi’s. PRAISE BE TO HE!!!!!

Haven’t seen it mentioned yet (I think), but I am digging on The Foundation on Apple TV right now. Only o e season in but hard to go wrong with Isaac Asimov.

1. Star Trek (lumping original, TNG, Voyager, DS9, etc all together for simplicity)

2. Twilight Zone / Outer Limits

3. Dr. Who

4. The X-Files

5. A.L.F.
I fuggin love ALF.

CSB. It was on when I was about 15 and I’d watch it with my younger brother. Fast forward to the early 2000’s, my oldest son, which some of you know has Down Syndrome, somehow discovered ALF. He must have caught a rerun or something, but it became his favorite show. So I’ve rewatched ALF now several times with him. It’s still fun to watch to this day.

I really enjoyed first season. I think the fact I’ve never read the books allows me to enjoy it fully as most of the criticisms I’ve heard are due to the liberties the show runners took with the source material. But, from what I understand of the books, there had to be significant changes to the story telling due to many factors. Either way, I’m happy season 2 has kicked off.

That is my number 1 and The Leftovers #2 (is that SciFi??) #3 Last of Us. For some reason, I have not seen that many. Some on my hope-to-watch list are:

Black Mirror
Lost
Stranger Things
Fire Fly
Severence

Maybe the Boys should be in my top 5.
LOST was fantastic, until it wasn’t. Great cliffhangers, both on episodes and end of seasons. Great characters and character development. For me it was the last must see non-cable TV before streaming hit. About mid season 5 is when the story line started to fade for me.

The writers painted themselves in a corner and had no idea how to get out. It’s like they had no idea where the story was going season to season.

Thanks. The Federation came to me after I shut down the PC yesterday and then I forgot all about it.

As an adaptation of Asimov, it didn't remain faithful very long. So in that sense, it's disappointing. But once you get past that, it's rather impressive.

Similarly, the adaptation of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time was jarring for hard core fans like me, but once I got over all the changes, I liked it a lot, too. That's fantasy, not SciFi, of course, but the point is similar.
