Best War Movies Per Conflict

Might have missed it but The Bridges at Toko-Ri with William Holden and the always gorgeous Grace Kelly would have to be listed as a top Korean War movie.

“Where do we get such men?”

I guess we gotta mention Alamo.

Rough Riders was a series I believe but should be made into a colossal feature film. Some great things about that story. Starting with how they snuck onto the ship to get there.

Band of Brothers- although not a movie- is better than Saving Private Ryan imo.

For documentaries: I think Avengers: End Game is better than Interstellar

Revolutionary War
Not a large sample size but "1776" comes in at #1 for me. "The Patriot" wins the popularity contest. "The Last Of The Mohicans" is there as well

War of 1812
"The Buccaneer" wins by default.

Civil War
"Glory" and it isn't even close.

WWI
"All Quite On The Western Front"

WWII
Competition galore. For me, "Saving Private Ryan" is #1. "Schindler's List" & "The Thin Red Line" are excellent as well.

Korean War
Not a huge treasure trove but "The Manchurian Candidate" seems a winner by default. "MASH" as well.

Vietnam War
Plenty to choose from here. "The Deer Hunter" is my first choice. Tons of honerable mentions here. "Apocalypse Now", "Platoon" & "We Were Soldiers" in there.

Iraq War
"Hurt Locker", "American Sniper" & "Restrepo" are 1a/1b/1c in any order.

Love to hear everyone's opinion on this.
I respectfully disagree about best Vietnam flick. I have to go with Apocalypse Now followed by the others you listed. All are good films, but AN is truly unique and masterfully crafted.

I've always enjoyed naval WWII movies over the air and land forces ones.

Run Silent, Run Deep; Sink the Bismarck; Greyhound--all 3 are favorites that I've watched multiple times.

For a non-naval, The Eagle Has Landed should get some love.

Some more SIAP-

French and Indian War - Drums Along the Mohawk (John Ford)

WW2 - Battleground
A Bridge Too Far
The Longest Day

Korean War - Pork Chop Hill

I liked Go Tell The Spartans for a Vietnam movie
Pretty solid movie. I still remember the scene with the “crackerjack group of locals” that were going to assist defending the village.Dudes with shovels and hoes (not the good kind).

Did you ever see In Harm's Way? It has a great cast although the story gets a little slow at times. Still worth watching.

Still has one of the most remarkable scenes I’ve ever seen - pretty brazenly shows Kirk Douglas raping a woman in a way I’m not sure they’d have the balls to do today.

OIF/OEF - The Outpost (AINEC). While I like Jeremy Renner, generally, The Hurt Locker is hot trash, one of the most unrealistic war movies ever made.

Vietnam - My dad's favorite is Hamburger Hill, I agree.

Not a movie, but The Red Badge of Courage should not be forgotten.

For me personally, For Whom the Bell Tolls, particularly El Sordos last stand, is some of the best things I have read period. It's set in the Spanish Civil War in the 1930's.

Metallica wrote that song about this chapter.
+1 on For Whom the Bell Tolls. Definitely Hemingway's best IMO. And FTR, The Sun Also Rises blows goats. Even when I first read it as a teenager, I didn't see it as a great revelation that happiness was not to be found in materialism, alcohol, and sex. Same goes for The Great Gatsby.

Missing a category…

War on Terror
Zero Dark Thirty

Not a "war" so much as it was a "conflict", but I think They Died With Their Boots On (a Custer film) deserves a shout-out. It partially takes place during the Civil War if that means anything.

Skimmed through I'd throw Generation Kill out there and vote for "We Were Soldiers" in the Vietnam category. Happened to watch that in theaters with my dad and he broke down crying during one of the scenes - one of three times I can recall him crying...

Another WWII mini-series along the lines of Band of Brothers and Pacific is FINALLY going to debut in September of this year, after 10 years of production time. Originally, Masters of the Air, a Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg production was going to air on HBO but now will premier on AppleTV+. This is a story based on the book by the same name which deals with the history of America's Eighth AF in the European Theater, fighting the German Luftwaffe under improbable odds in its bombing missions over Nazi controlled Europe.

I have read the book a couple of times and have found it to be the authoritative standard on this subject after reading several similar books on the same topic. Needless to say, I have been waiting a long time for this release. Now, if I only had AppleTV+.

‘Masters of the Air’ release date and cast for the Apple TV Plus series

The Steven Spielberg series, with its 'Oppenheimer'-sized cast, is on its way after almost a decade of delays.

After being stuck in development hell for almost ten years, Masters of the Air, the forgotten World War II series by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Cary Fukunaga, is finally moving forward. In fact, from being a show that was expected to never see the light of day, the war drama has switched to having a release date just mere weeks away.

Touted as a spiritual successor to HBO’s war dramas Band of Brothers and The Pacific, plans Masters of the Air came into existence back in 2012, with Hanks and Spielberg set to be executive producers of the upcoming show as well. HBO was swift in confirming that it had green-lit the drama, which would adapt David L. Miller’s book of the same name that focuses on the United States Army Forces during World War II, especially the bombing of Nazi Germany, and “the elite group of fighters who put their lives on the line in the most dangerous role of all.”

After a few years of silence, HBO backed out of the deal in 2019 and Apple TV Plus swooped in to claim the exclusive streaming rights of the series that will explore the story of the 100th Bombardment Group of the Eighth Air Force. Already derailed for years, the series next fell victim to the COVID-19 pandemic, which was followed by all the sexual misconduct allegations against its director Cary Fukunaga (No Time To Die) that quickly usurped his place as Hollywood’s new sought-after director.

While Fukunaga is yet to find a way to shrug off the slump in his career, Apple TV Plus seems to have decided that it is done keeping Masters of the Air on a shelf. While it is getting little promotion at the moment — probably to refrain from sparking the whole Fukunaga debate – its A-list star cast is more than capable of amping up the hype on their own, in case news of the $300 million series rising from its ashes in the era of cruel cancelations wasn’t enough.

Long before Oppenheimer decided to cast half of Hollywood, Masters of the Air already laid copyright claim to the trend with its chunky cast of talented actors.

So far, we don’t have an official trailer for the upcoming series, but Apple TV Plus’ Winter 2022 & Beyond video did debut a first look at Golden Globe-winner Austin Butler (Elvis) as the real-life character of Major Gale Cleven who led the bombings in Germany.

Butler is not the only Oscar nominee buffing out the cast of Masters of the Air as it will also see Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin, The Batman) as Lt. Curtis Biddick. There are other famous names attached to the show like Freddy Carter (Shadow and Bone), Callum Turner (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald), Anthony Boyle (Broadway’s Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education and Doctor Who), David Shields (The Crown), Ben Radcliffe (Pandora), Elliot Warren (The Batman), Nate Mann (Licorice Pizza), Rafferty Law (Twist), Edward Ashley (The Terror), Darragh Cowley (The Essex Serpent), and yes, Steven Spielberg’s son, Sawyer Spielberg.

Masters of the Air release date — when it is debuting on Apple TV Plus

Now, this is a tricky question as no one associated with the series has offered an official date for its release. But recently reports had been around that the series, which began production in 2021 and was expected to release in 2022, was destined for a Spring 2023 window. Initially, the chances of that happening were slim as we are yet to see any stills or even a teaser for the nine episodes of the series.

But suddenly, after a radio silence of two years, Masters of the Air has a release date out of the blue. If we are to believe the show’s IMDb page, the Apple TV Plus series is set to debut in a matter of weeks, on Sept. 20. So far, this update hasn’t been backed by the creatives or cast of the drama nor are there any confirmations whether it will be a weekly release or whether the streamer is planning to add all the episodes in one go.

I don't think you could call Schindler's List a movie about WW2. It's more of a movie about the holocaust with the backdrop of WW2.
