Cheers for Furman and Princeton. Love to see that especially when not against us as we lose those type of games way too often.

The Big 10 had some big wins today as we do not usually think of jNW and penn st carrying the banners in the dance. PSU took down one of those great Big 12 teams.

texas a and m is sec. Impressive win by them nonetheless.

I don't know. Fran isn't ever going to have a team that seriously competes for a national championship, but he is going to field a team that is consistently competitive in the Big 10 and making NCAA tournaments. Although that's going to be a tough ask for next year as they will be very young.

And Maryland came back to beat a decent West Virginia team.

Iowa hasn't had but 2 teams the challenged for national championships since I was in High School. I almost ready to retire now.

Yup. That's why I find it a pretty ridiculous criteria to decide if someone should be hired or fired on. There are only about a dozen schools that can say anything different than Iowa on that as well.

Iowa is a P5 school which puts it on a different level for financial resources. There are something like only 5 P5 schools that have a longer string of not making the Sweet16 than Iowa, and Fran is responsible for over half the dry spell.

The debate shouldn't be whether Fran should be fired or not, because he won't be fired. The debate is whether winning 55% of your games in B1G play and getting in an expanded NCAA tourney roughly at 50% clip is really that high a bar. Getting there is great, but not so much when your are DOA as soon as you get there because you only play half the game.

For many fans that is a great outcome---and that they have the right to that opinion. If some other fan would prefer a higher ceiling, why wouldn't those fan's opinion's be equally valid?

If Fran himself felt any pressure at all, then he might actually look in the mirror and embrace defense for instance. It is the low bar that makes Fran and Ferentz so comfortable in running their programs as fiefdoms.

I can't argue much about this. I guess I'm in the, I won't be upset if they keep him but I won't be upset if he were to get fired zone. There are things Fran does that drive me nuts but there are things about him I really like too. I can say before Fran I had quit watching basketball altogether so he got me paying attention again at least. But I don't know if that's worthy of "keep him head coach at all costs!" level of gratitude.
