i will give they have some offense but Dear God their defense is so bad. No wonder the Iowa and Michigan game combined last year with more kids drafted than the entire Big 12. No blocking, tackling or any fundamentals. It will get better with Texas coming up. But it must be 7 v. 7 in conference. They treat games like Arena. Quick score so we get it back. Wow. ISU should win 7 games a year. Play multiple OOC games against nobody but their Super Bowl and go against these defenses. Unreal.

ISU took a midwestern Ohio coach recruiting alot of Midwestern kids and playing a bend but don’t break drop 8 guys into coverage defense and totally stymied many Big 12 offenses .... go figure.

The subject of this thread is an oxymoron. In fact, as far as college football is concerned, it is quite possibly the oxymoron by which all other oxymora are measured.

Kinda like "Big Ten Offense" is the oxymoron by which all other oxymora are measured.

Well interestingly enough, these discussion always digress into conjecture and guessing, but this is a different era. To start with, I have for years said ISU's formula to win was play great Defense and run the ball and viola, here we are...

Where it gets fun is, we no longer have to "guess" Big 12 O's would struggle with "real" D...

Iowa State played real D and they held....

Oklahoma from 45 pts per game to 31..
Texas 29.5 to 17
TT from 34.3 to 13
TCU from 33.2 to 7
West Va...35 to 20...

In fact outside of OSU, Iowa St struggled more with Iowa's antiquated O, than Big 12's. Of course the same could be said for our D, but it happens...

Not much guessing to do....They don't play real D in the Big 12 outside of ISU and sometimes TCU.

Great post.

It lines up with what I have thought too .... instead of trying to out-pace these teams... play B1G football and they end up with the best season in school history.

A reasonable commentary, but Texas, OU and KSU also play solid defense. Keep in mind, with high speed offenses there's no avoiding your defense having to face more possessions per game from opponents...and statistically that's going to be reflected in a number of ways. While I would not argue that Big 12 defenses are generally a step behind B1G teams as a whole, the margin is much less than some seem to think here. Likewise, offensively, B1G teams are more capable than often given credit for.

Yes good input and you are of course correct! I dare say, and I forget what Iowa States depth chart on defense looks like, but I'm willing to suggest they will be one of the top two or three defenses in the league for the ostensible future.

I also think Texas will play legitimate D...Oklahoma and TCU for whatever reason are wildly up-and-down. Now trailing in line with what you've already said, sometimes that's just football but in my opinion, Iowa State played the best defense in the league this year, at least game to game, surely you'd agree ?
