Big Ten Announces 2022-25 Football Schedules

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa football team will resume its day-after-Thanksgiving meeting with Nebraska beginning in 2022, as the Big Ten Conference announced the entire slate of Big Tenfootball schedules for 2022-25 on Wednesday.

The Hawkeyes will close each of those seasons against the Cornhuskers in the Hy-Vee Heroes Game series, beginning Friday, Nov. 25, 2022, in KinnickStadium. The Hawkeyes have closed each season since 2011 against Nebraska on the Friday after Thanksgiving, but will meet Wisconsin on the final weekend of the regular season in 2020 (home) and 2021 (away).

“We are excited to resume the tradition of the Hy-Vee Heroes Game with Nebraska to close our regular season,” said Gary Barta, Henry B. and Patricia B. Tippie Director of Athletics Chair. “The Friday game has been well-received on both campuses and the annual recognition of heroes from each state has been a popular program.”

The Hawkeyes will play four conference home games in 2022 and 2024, with five Big Ten contests in Kinnick in 2023 and 2025. Along with its West Division foes, Iowa in 2022 will play Michigan at home and travel to Ohio State and Rutgers. Along with Michigan, Iowa will also host Northwestern, Wisconsin, and Nebraska.

In 2023, Iowa hosts Purdue, Rutgers, Michigan State, Minnesota, and Illinois, while traveling to Wisconsin, Northwestern, Penn State, and Nebraska.

Iowa in 2024 hosts Northwestern, Maryland, Wisconsin, and Nebraska, while visiting Purdue, Rutgers, Illinois, Indiana, and Minnesota. The 2025 slate includes home games with Ohio State, Illinois, Minnesota, Purdue, and Rutgers, and road trips to Wisconsin, Northwestern, Michigan, and Nebraska.

Better hope Rutgers improves a bit or those are some pretty meh schedules, although 2022 should be a good one.

That is the most boring scheduling I can imagine. Didn’t the guy who was tasked with scheduling say “It’s time to mix things up” or something to that affect?

Pathetic. I just want to see somebody new, but sadly we won't.

Riddle me this.

How in the hell are we playing/(played) Penn State in:

2016
2017
2018
2019
2020
2021
2023

7 out of 8 years? Who is making these decisions?
Each team was paired with a team from the other division to play each year from 2016-2021. I believe we got PSU, Nebraska got OSU, Wisconsin got Michigan, Northwestern got MSU, Purdue got Indiana, Illinois got Rutgers, and Minnesota got Maryland

Could have some favorable years there in terms of scheduling. I'm expecting a longer term general improvement for the program. No rough gauntlets to fight through other than the 2020 month.

I could be wrong but Middle Tennessee State, Kent State, South Dakota State, and Colorado State are new opponents, at least in the Ferentz era.

edit: Kent State is a prior opponent

So, we don't see Ohio State in Iowa city until 2025?

Super conferences are ruining college football.
2017 Ohio St here
2020 @ OH St
2022 @ OH St
2025 Ohio St here

why can't they do the home/away games in back to back years?

How does scheduling wins make you a better team?

Didn't say it does. Doesn't mean we won't benefit from a favorable schedule. You are aware that the B1G did the scheduling not Iowa. When I say I see the program improving long term I mean from within. Coaching, recruiting... so forth. Think 2015 with more convincing wins.

The Big Ten's "protected crossover rivals" for 2022-2027:

Nebraska vs. Michigan
Wisconsin vs. Ohio State
Iowa vs. Rutgers
Minnesota vs. Michigan State
Northwestern vs. Maryland
Illinois vs. Penn State

Purdue vs. Indiana (permanent crossover rivalry)

This may end up being a big part of the division race every year. Playing Rutgers every year instead of OSU/Michigan could be the difference once or twice

Because everybody in Iowa loves to travel to Joisey! good god...I can't think of a less "Big Ten" place.

Will one of you please wake me up on 11/23/2024, because I'm pretty sure I'll be sleeping through the Iowa football season up to that point.

Well the old me would be pretty disappointed to see Illinois State, Kent State and SDSU on there. But when they sell out against NIU and UNI, you can't really expect them to shoot any higher.

Why are the crossovers so inconsistent? Our B1G schedule cycles from super hard to easy, with very little in between.

We play both Michigan and OSU in 2022 and 2025, but never one of them.

Wow, Rutgers is our crossover. Weird. I guess we'd better sweep 'em.

Right, but South Dakota state is ridiculous. Schedule an FBS team.
