Big test this weekend for preseason B1G favorites. Three games on the road against defending champs … I’ll be keeping an eye on those scores.

Is the Loras game being played today? Last year Iowa lost to them.

Sure hope so. Not only do some on the pitching staff need to throw live, Iowa needs this game so that Brecht’s 4 game suspension ends after Saturday’s game.

Updated after 2/27 games
Not a bad weekend for B1G teams facing quality competition. Illini takes 2 against ranked So. Miss. Maryland takes 1 of 3 on road against defending champs. IU takes 1 of 3 against Texas on road. Nebraska sweeps what was touted to be a decent South Alabama team. And, of course, Iowa beats LSU on neutral site.

Boy, the games at US Bank Stadium (home of the Vikings) in Minneapolis this Wed March 1 thru Sun March 5 look interesting. They will involve Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Hawaii, Nebraska, Maryland and Minnesota.

The Gophers then host 2 more games at US Bank Stadium before they hit the road for a game on March 10.

The joys of playing baseball in the freakin' winter!

What did Brecht do to receive the suspension?
Used some choice words to HP umpire while walking off the mound on Saturday. Got ejected.

Come to think of it, wasn’t the suspension for the Michigan pitcher who used a foreign substance against Iowa in the BTT suspended about the same?

UGH . . . Brings back frustrating memories of that fateful 2020 season cut short by COVID when Iowa beat North Carolina and a ranked Duke team and lost to a ranked North Carolina State team at US Bank Stadium. I'll go to my deathbed thinking that Iowa would have been a Regional team that year.

hard to believe that its been almost 3 years since everything shut down

March 11, 2020: NBA shut down
March 12, 2020: men's basketball tourneys canceled
March 13, 2020: Friday the 13th; what else could go wrong?

Mon March 16, 2020: bars around the country were closed because St Patty's Day was the following day; restaurants, gyms, etc also closed down

Congrats on the win!!!

What are your thoughts on playing baseball in a football stadium? I guess that's one way to get games in during the winter ;)

its still weird to me seeing artifical turf in the infield. I like grass and dirt. But, again, I guess the northern schools have to do what they have to do.

The B1G now has some HUGE wins over the SEC:
Iowa over LSU
Nebraska over Vanderbilt

Will the B1G finally get some respect come NCAA Tournament Selection Day?

It was a nice win....the program could use a little momentum. Iowa looks to me to be the early class of the league right now.

I don't mind playing up there.....great way to get games in without a ton of travel and gets some of those southern teams up north. As for your last question, I'd like to say yes....but I think we all know how that will turn out.

What will be the SEC's excuse for losing to B1G teams? The only bad thing is, they might not schedule B1G teams moving forward.

It's just nice to see B1G teams not only being really competitive against the top teams from the SEC but beating them, too. SEC teams have been outside practicing a lot whereas B1G teams' outside practice has been very limited. Not sure when Minnesota will be able to play on their home turf because there is a ton of snow yet to melt.

Thanks for the discussion.

That's why I agree with Heller that the season starts too early.....but no one down south will vote to give up their advantage

Tough Sunday for B1G teams. Maryland will almost certainly drop out of Coaches and d1 Top 25. Not sure if the perception of Iowa’s opponents will be enough to get them into the Top 25 of either poll.

Rubber hits the road this weekend. Tech dropped an epic 16 inning battle yesterday to ranked A&M. Big rivalry game.

The Big Ten has had a few big wins, none bigger than Iowa over LSU. But it's tough for a conference to get any respenct when most of the league is below .500 and has 2 teams with a combined 0-20 record. Come conference play those games are going to be brutal on the RPI.

25% of Iowa's B1G baseball schedule is against those teams (Northwestern and Minnesota) who have yet to win a game this year.

Now . . . losses to low RPI teams are better if they occur on the road and Iowa travels both to Evanston and Minneapolis but it doesn't change the fact that, when all is said and done, Iowa's B1G schedule will be heavily scrutinized.

That is why this weekend's games are vital. Iowa doesn't need a sweep to make a statement. Taking 2 of 3 would be really helpful. Winning at least 1 game is vital (but really have to avoid getting blown out in the two losses under this scenario). Getting swept in what may be Iowa's toughest RPI/ranked opponent three-game series all year would be a tough blow.

Given its schedule and the perceptions of B1G baseball, there is very little margin of error for teams like Iowa.

There are 41 games remaining against D1 opponents and only 10 of those games are against teams with a record above .500. It's odd to call any games in mid March must wins but this weekend games feels like they are. There are not many other resume building games left on the schedule and Iowa is going to lose a few to teams they shouldn't.

We're of similar mindsets. It's as close to a "must win" series as you can have in Games 12-14 of a NCAA season. It's definitely a "must not get swept" series. Losing 2 of 3 games that are hotly contested and close games wouldn't be the end of the world.

I think it'll even out a bit. Now it won't be great, but Maryland, Nebraska, and Indiana will probably post pretty decent records before it's all said and done.

Yes, it’s still early and there are a few teams on the schedule close to .500.

I see Iowa is ranked 23rd at this moment while TTU is or was #24? Also, TTU has home and aways against New Mex and Abilene Christian. That's nice for them. It's too bad Iowa can't get some home and aways against say a Mizzou or Arkansas or Kentucky instead of Bradley or Illinois State.

According to Heller, there are pressures by administration to avoid traveling more than 3 hours (one way) for weekday games and, in any event, it is a challenge to get SEC schools like Mizzou, Arkansas and Kentucky to agree to schedule home-and-away mid-week games. He advised that teams like Missouri, Creighton and even Notre Dame are more than willing to host a mid-week game against Iowa. It is wholly another issue getting those schools to agree to come to Iowa City.

EDIT: During that conversation, I suggested to Heller that, in light of how RPI works, perhaps it would be best to consider scheduling conference opponents (i.e. Nebraska, Minnesota, Illinois, Northwestern) for non-conference games. I know that Michigan and Michigan State have done that in the past. (Fully recognizing that, in 2023, playing Illinois State and Bradley is likely better for Iowa's RPI than playing Minnesota or Northwestern).

Given the history between the two schools, I'd like Iowa to have Illinois on the schedule every year. A home and away with Illinois this year instead of UW-Milw and UIC would be much more attractive.

Playing a conference opponent as part of your Non-Con schedule is actually something I hadn't thought of. That would seem to be a really good idea.

The other thing is you want these games to be winnable so you can give non starters and freshman a chance to hit or pitch in live action. This is why scheduling games against Coe works, the game has zero impact on the RPI and you can get players into the game that don’t get opportunities during the weekend.

Updated after 3/7 games

Noted: Two future non-conference opponents faced two future winless-to-date conference opponents.

UIC keeps Northwestern winless with a 10-6 win.
Minnesota notches its first victory of the year with a win over Northern Illinois.

Also . . . as always, these updates are fantastic. Many thanks for the effort.

12Ouch Michigan and MSU
MSU's loss to Wofford isn't a bad one. Wofford's got a good program. Had great chance to be the Southern Conference rep in a Regional but blew it against UNC - Greenville. Lost twice at end of tournament after beating them 4 times earlier in the season. Their RPI last year was #37 (right now they sit at #3 - but its early).

Michigan's loss to Oakland had to be a bitter pill. They're riding a 6 game losing streak. However, before losing to Oakland, they'd lost to UC-Irvine (10-2); #12 UCLA (10-2); #16 TCU (7-5), #21 Texas Tech (12-2) and #7 Louisville (11-1). That's a gauntlet.
