B1G Announces Tournament Pre-Seeds

IOWA CITY, Iowa-- University of Iowa senior Thomas Gilman is listed as wrestling’s top 125-pounder in the Big Ten Conference pre-seeds released Monday by the league office. The 2017 Big Ten tournament begins Saturday at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Indiana.

Gilman is 24-0 this season, including an 8-0 mark against the tournament field, and has scored bonus points in 21 of his 24 matches. It is the second time in his career he entered the tournament at the top seed. He was No. 1 in 2015 when he placed runner-up to Ohio State’s Nathan Tomasello.

Tomasello is now the top seed at 133, where senior Cory Clark sits at No. 3 behind Nebraska’s Eric Montoya. Clark is 12-2 this season and the defending conference champion at 133. He was seeded No. 2 last year when he defeated three consecutive top 10 opponents to win the Big Ten title.

Three Hawkeyes are seeded No. 2, including junior Brandon Sorensen at 149, redshirt freshman Michael Kemerer at 157, and defending champion Sammy Brooks at 184.

Sorensen is a two-time Big Ten runner-up. He is seeded behind defending Big Ten and NCAA champion Zain Retherford of Penn State. Sorensen lost to Retherford, 9-8, in the second tiebreak in the pair’s only meeting this season.

Kemerer is seeded No. 2 behind Penn State’s Jason Nolf. Kemerer is 25-1 overall and 9-1 against the tournament field. His only loss of the season was a 9-4 decision to Nolf on Jan. 20.

Brooks is the No. 2 seed for the first time in his career. He was the top seed and placed third as a sophomore in 2015, and won the championship as the No. 3 seed in 2016. He is 21-2 overall and 7-2 against the tournament field. His only losses this season have been to Penn State’s Bo Nickal (No. 1 seed) and Indiana’s Nathan Jackson (No. 3 seed). He avenged his only loss to Jackson in the consolation finals of the Midlands Championships.

Senior Alex Meyer is the No. 5 seed at 174. Meyer is 20-5 overall and 7-3 against the field. Ohio State’s Bo Jordan, who defeated Meyer, 3-2, on Jan. 27, is the top seed at 174.

Three more Hawkeyes received seeds prior to their Big Ten Conference tournament debuts. Senior Topher Carton is the No. 6 seed at 141, redshirt freshman Joey Gunther is seeded fifth at 165, and redshirt freshman Cash Wilcke is the No. 7 seed at 197. The Hawkeyes are unseeded at 285, where redshirt freshman Steven Holloway is making his tournament debut.

The top seeds at 141, 165, 197, and 285 are Anthony Ashnault (Rutgers), Isaiah Martinez (Illinois), Brett Pfarr (Minnesota), and Kyle Snyder (Ohio State).

A quick glance tells me Alex Meyer got a great draw. He could make the finals.

If Suriano defaults out then I think there could be a upset brewing. We could legitimately have finalists at 125, 133, 149, 157, 174 and 184.

My thoughts:
125: as expected. Shouldn't have a problem winning.
133: works out great. 3 vs 2 gets him an extra match and I think he matches up better vs rappo than McKee and he basically majored McKee.
141: love it. Opposite side of Ashnault and is certainly capable of beating thorn and Gulibon.
149: as expected. Should make finals
157: same as 149. Murphy vs Berger should be good in quarters. Hope Kem keeps his game and can beat Berger again if he faces him in semis
165: the top 4 are clearly better than Gunther. He just needs to take care of business on the backside and make it to nattys.
174: I think Meyer gets a great draw. Brunson is his toughest matchup and he's the 3 seed. Meyer could make the finals if he wrestles on his game.
184: surprised to see Sammy at 2 and not 3 but I'm not complaining. Sammy should make finals if he doesn't get too wild and beat himself.
197: figured Wilcke would be 6-7. Just please qualify.
285: have fun. Let the fur fly.

Really like Clark and Brooks' draw. Also think Carton could potentially make a run - he can beat Thorn and Gulibon.

For Clark - Tomasello, Richards and Micic all on the other side.
For Brooks - Nickal, Dudley and Martin all on the other side.

Hopefully these hold.

I say build a bionic leg for Stoll, get him back up to speed and have him pull off the miracle on the mat to win the B10s at HWT and help the Hawks win the Big Ten title.

Why?.....Because I said so.

Agree - great draws for Clark, Meyer, and Brooks. The others were to be expected.

Where is Kemerer at health wise?

Wow. First time I have looked at our seeds and haven't been like "wow, he really got screwed". Hopefully these hold and we wrestle to our potential. Of course, none of our high seeds will get pigtails, but I have come to the realization that I am cheering for the individuals this year (team race is out the window).

The biggest question for me... which Meyer shows up? The one that beat Hall or the one that lost to Witherspoon of ISU.

If Carton gets his stuff together he could make the finals. He beat McChrystal and lost close (winnable) matches to Pletcher, Thorn, and Gulibon.

Do you mean he was his toughest matchup this year? He won't wrestle Brunson if he wins out as he is the #5 seed.

Matches that will be critical to our team success at B1Gs
125
Gman taking care of business here, his toughest match should be Lizak or Lambert. I'm assuming Suriano does the bare minimum here to qualify for NCAAs so he can have more time to heal.

133
Clark vs Montoya Semi
Clark vs Tomasello Final
I think Clark reverses the decision against Montoya and makes it a 3-1 career against him. He will be game for Tomasello the first time around, and make adjustments for the second match on saturday night in St. Louis.

141
Carton vs Thorn Quarter
Carton vs Gulibon Semi
Both very winnable matches for Carton, lets hope he wrestles his best of the year at the end of the year. Turns those two close losses into close wins at B1Gs, and go into NCAAs with a lot of momentum. If Carton makes the finals here, I think theres a legitimate chance of an upset for the team title.

149
Sorensen vs Rethorford final.. hopefully Sorensen can make the match as competitive as the dual, and Sorensen wins a match making this an actual rivalry.

157
Kemerer vs Berger semi
I'm not sure that I can see Kemerer winning against Nolf in the finals just yet. Hoping he closes the gap and can get to some offense of his own. Hope he stays the course against Berger. Won in the final OT the first time, then won in regulation last time. Now time to widen the gap in regulation.

165
Gunther vs Joseph quarter
Joseph scored 3 quick takedowns in the dual meet then not much for the other 5:30. We've seen Gunther getting better every match this year and hanging right with the top guys. He can put himself in a position to win the match.

174
Meyer vs Amine quarter
Meyer vs BoJo semi
Meyer vs Hall Final
Lets see which Alex Meyer shows up. Could see a champ here or a 5th place. Alex Meyer will determine his own path for NCAA seeding. I've got faith in him!

184
Brooks vs Jackson Semi
Brooks vs Nickal semi
I've got a lot of faith that Brooks will make the finals here. Hopefully he can give Nickal a match, and not get stunned like last time. I know that Sammy can wrestle with Nickal, he's just got to be a little quicker and more situationally aware.

197
Wilcke placing top 6. If he could get 5th and outplace Robertson who beat him 6-3 at midlands, that would be fantastic. Or if he could get the W against McCutcheon that he was so close to in the dual and get 4th would be huge for the team race. I think the top 3 at 197 here are pretty much locked in.

285
Don't expect anything points-wise here, if we get a win its just bonus. Will face a seeded wrestler first round.

Brunson is his toughest matchup in the field. Obviously they wouldn't meet on the championship side unless it was the finals. That's why I mentioned it was a great draw
