Boise State adds ESports

So they drop wrestling and add button-pushing? Ah jeez. What next?

"These schools' esports programs, however, are not operated, overseen or funded by their athletics departments, but rather by various departments of their schools. Boise State is no different; its program will be backed by its College of Education and College of Innovation and Design."

From the article, it's not part of the athletic department. It's not like they dropped wrestling for esports.

Now they are just waiting for a huge endowment from The People's Republic of China.

I see this as universities valuing what the esports teach (innovation), perhaps, more than what wrestling teaches (discipline, responsibility, work ethic, etc.). There is room for both as long as we acknowledge the educational value of wrestling.
Hi GG - not more than what physical sports teach - but in addition to what they teach.
I'm more in favor of the face to face sports with physical contact (not just wrestling offers that) - because someday kids may have to deal with people other then the keyboard and a bunch of internet unknowns. Kinda like a wife and kids and parents ......

I think it sends the wrong message - unless they are out there creating Beta games for sport - and others have 2 years to learn it and compete.... In other words - what they are doing has zero to do with innovation.

The only esports I respect are Dota 2 and RTS games.

Oh btw, any of you guys care to guess the prize pool for 'the superbowl' of Dota 2 this past season?

~$25 million dollars. Last years was ~$21 million, and the year before was ~$18 million. Pretty crazy stuff.

I know - wow - what does 2nd get? a free game to take home?
Haha 1st place doesn't actually get it all, the whole prize pool is distributed among all teams with 1st place taking the biggest chunk.

1st- 10.86 mil
2nd- 3.95 mil
3rd- 2.59 mil
4th- 1.72 mil
5/6th- 1.11 mil
etc..

Jim, I don't mean to quibble, but I seriously doubt that most computer games teach innovation any more than graphic design (what I do) or direct marketing (what you do). Making computer games requires some creativity. But playing them?
Just calling them "eSports" is a misnomer. I've got no problem with a campus club for gamers. It's the slide into "sports" that I object to. Computer games can be challenging and fun, but sports they are not.
Just cause gamers can make big money doesn't make it a sport either. Is chess a sport? How about poker? Can I get a scholarship to study poker? I got it. How about the Bronco Blackjack team? The only way I'd make one is if they had 10 weight classes.

Point taken. But why do they call it a "varsity" esports program. Does that mean there's a JV esports program?

You are old - I'm sure no one would want to watch your old ass play Pong 8 hours a day. And I'm sure nobody would bet on you.
They have pong!!! I'm all in. Hopefully they have Space Invaders, Asteroids, and my all time favorite Mr. Do!.

Maybe Galaga, Vangaurd, Pacman, Ms Pacman, Journey, Kangaroo, Punch Out, Buger Time, Dig Dug.......

Oh, oh, maybe they have those awesome one button bar games like trap shoot and baseball.

Not sure. My best guess is instead of it being a club team? I think club teams are just school affiliated whereas this "varsity" team would be school sponsored.

Damn, you guys are going to lose Gilman from HWC to the Bronco Video Club?

Or is he a COD guy?

Maybe we could add UNO to our sports repertoire at UI? You could have three divisions. 1. "Can wash my own balls" 2. "Can't see my toes" 3. "Uses an electric cart at Walmart"

Folks can do what they want I guess but just dont think the word sports belongs labeled with video game playing. I have always loved texas holdem but it too isnt exactly a sport as the basic fundamentals to it are math, odds and luck.

I get that some don't like competitive gaming labeled a sport, but this is serious business and is only going to get bigger. Kids nowaday are just as likely to watch gaming videos on twitch and youtube as athletics events. They're working out broadcasting and monetizing right now, but make no mistake competitive gaming is here to stay.

yeah, but will it replace ping pong in the olympics?

So then Clark still has eligibility. Is Boise actively recruiting him?

Innovation? With all due respect, they aren't writing the code for the game, they are just playing it. IMO, innovation would come from the people that actually think up and create the games that these people are playing.

How many scholarships will the NCAA allow (when it becomes an official "sport")?

LOL RW!

Busted. Pong was the first and ONLY video game I ever owned.

Did your family get an Atari for Christmas too the year they came out?
Yep - Dad got it for us and made sure to remind us it cost $99. My comment at you was all in fun SW - just a poke. Actually I am glad to know another teammate / wrestler from the glory days.
